School Board of the City of Virginia Beach names Dr. Donald Robertson Jr. superintendent

The School Board of the City of Virginia Beach voted to name Dr. Donald Robertson Jr. as superintendent at its meeting Jan. 23. A native of Hampton Roads, Dr. Robertson began his career as a math teacher with Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) in 1988 and progressed in leadership roles including assistant principal of Bayside High School, principal of Salem High School, chief strategy and innovation officer, chief schools officer, chief of staff and acting superintendent.

Hundreds of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) students will participate in the 16th Annual African American Male Summit on Jan. 20 at Frank W. Cox High School. Boys in grades six through 12 will share ideas with each other and with adult community members on topics such as student leadership, community involvement, relationship-building, and physical and mental well-being.

Doctoral Internship Program in Health Service Psychology

Psychological Services at Virginia Beach City Public Schools offers a doctoral psychology internship program in health service psychology for eligible doctoral candidates in school psychology, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and combined psychology programs. Doctoral interns are provided comprehensive training experiences, educational didactic seminars, and extensive supervision to develop and refine their clinical skills, leadership, self-management, and professional identity. The doctoral internship program provides a full-time, 2,000-hour training experience which runs from July 1 - June 30. Doctoral interns receive an annual stipend of $32,000 plus health and dental benefits. For the 2024-2025 school year, we will have five intern positions available.

Applicants should submit an AAPI Online application for consideration by November 30, 2023. No additional or supplemental materials are required. All applicants will be emailed about their interview status by December 15. Selected applicants will be invited for interviews in January. Interviews are conducted virtually by video-conference. 2024 interviews will be conducted on: January 3, 5, 8, 12. Notification for APPIC Phase I occurs on Friday, February 16, 2024, according to APPIC procedures.

The doctoral internship program is also a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). The Virginia Beach City Public Schools Doctoral Internship Program agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
