Through teamwork and preparation, Virginia Beach City Public Schools is strengthening cardiac emergency response across its schools.

Led by the Health Services team, this initiative focuses on preparation, teamwork, and life-saving readiness.

Schools are implementing standardized Cardiac Emergency Response Plans, training staff members in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) and practicing coordinated response drills to ensure quick action and clear communication when seconds matter most. Staff from a wide range of roles—teachers, administrators, school nurses, office staff, and support personnel—are working together as trained response teams. Currently, 200 staff members have completed the American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR/AED Adult certification, and more than 35 schools have conducted full cardiac emergency response drills. In addition, and through a partnership with Project ADAM and Children’s Hospital of Richmond, 36 schools have earned the Project ADAM Heart Safe School Designation.

These efforts reflect a shared commitment to protecting the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors—and ensuring our schools are prepared to save lives.
