Community Listening Sessions Scheduled March 25 – April 3 ​​​​​​​ to Gain Resident Input on Future Election System

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 13, 2023) – The City of Virginia Beach, in partnership with the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, will hold a series of community listening sessions between March 25 and April 3. Residents will have an opportunity to provide their input on the City’s election system and how they elect their representatives. Feedback will be captured by the event moderators and provided to City Council in a final report.

Ask any Virginia Beach fifth grader what they’re reading in March, and they’ll all answer the same thing — “EllRay Jakes is Magic!” That’s because Virginia Beach City Public Schools is participating in an exciting literacy program called All District Reads, which puts a free book into the hands of every fifth grader and encourages them to read aloud and discuss the story with their families, classmates and community.

Immunization Requirements

  • DPT - A minimum of four doses, with at least one dose on or after the child's fourth birthday.
  • Polio - A minimum of four doses, with at least one dose on or after the child's fourth birthday.
  • Measles (Rubeola) - Two doses of the Measles (Rubeola) vaccine for all students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12. The first dose must have been at age 12 months or older; the second dose no sooner than one month after the first dose.
  • Rubella - A minimum of one dose of each administered at 12 months or older. This is usually given in combination with Measles (Rubeola) as the MMR vaccine.
  • Mumps - Two doses of the Mumps vaccine before entering kindergarten. This is usually administered in combination with the Measles (Rubeola) as the MMR vaccine.
  • Hepatitis A - (Effective July 1, 2021 required for all incoming KG students) A minimum of two properly spaced doses. The first dose must be administered at age 12 months or older.
  • Hepatitis B - A series of three vaccines for all students born on or after January 1, 1994. The third dose must not have been given before 24 weeks of age.
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) - A minimum of two doses before entering kindergarten (effective March 3, 2010) and for new enrolling first through eleventh grade students unless a history of chickenpox disease or lab tests are provided by a licensed qualified physician or licensed nurse practitioner. The first chickenpox dose must have been administered after 12 months of age.
  • Tdap (Booster) - for all rising 7th graders and new enrolling eight-12th graders (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis).
  • Meningococcal – (Effective July 1, 2021). The first dose is administered prior to 7th grade. Rising 12th graders will be required to have dose prior to school entry.
  • Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) – Effective, October 1, 2008, a complete series of 3 doses of HPV vaccine is required for females and males. The first dose shall be administered before the child enters the 6th grade. After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at their discretion, may elect for the student not to receive the HPV vaccine. More information...

A student whose immunizations are incomplete may be admitted conditionally, if the student provides documentary proof at the time of enrollment of having received at least one dose of the required immunization(s) accompanied by a schedule for completion of the remaining required dosage(s). At the time of enrollment, ALL immunizations must be as current and as up-to-date as possible. Enrollment and attendance can be delayed if compliance with immunization requirements is not met.

No certificate of immunization is required under the following: a) the parent/legal guardian submits a completed and notarized Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption that the immunizations are contrary to religious tenants or practices (form available at school), or b) medical exemption written statement is provided from a physician or licensed nurse practitioner that, in his/her professional judgment, all or part of the immunization requirements are contraindicated.
