When schools are closed due to inclement weather or emergency situations, the Reading Bus will not be in operation.

The Reading Bus has a teacher (and a driver) who engage families in literacy activities. Its main purpose is to promote reading and model early literacy learning to preschool children and their families.

What communities will the Reading Bus visit?

The Reading Bus is scheduled to visit VBCPS Pre-K classes, Headstart, the Atlantis community and the oceanfront. The most current schedule is posted at the top of this page.

What type of reading activities will occur on the Reading Bus?

At this time all activities take place outside of the bus. Preschool age children are read stories and introduced to an assortment of age-appropriate activities designed to engage them in literacy through hands-on activities using puppets, blocks, puzzles and music. Children participate in crafts and other reading activities with every book, poem and nursery rhyme introduced by the teacher on the bus.
