VBCPS features “The Art of Being a Military Child” exhibit at Lynnhaven Mall

Throughout April, the Month of the Military Child, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) student artwork will be featured at Lynnhaven Mall. Now in its 11th year, "The Art of Being a Military Child" showcases students' artistic interpretations of what it means to be a military dependent, including deployments, transitions, patriotism, family and school. It is the culmination of a contest open to all VBCPS students to which more than 700 art entries were submitted.

VB Technical & Career Education Center celebrating 50 years

The Virginia Beach Technical & Career Education Center (Tech Center, 2925 N Landing Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456) is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an open house reunion on Wednesday, March 29, from 6-8 p.m., for all students and staff both past and present. The Tech Center opened its doors in September 1972 to provide career-training opportunities for students in grades 11 and 12. Over the past 50 years, the Tech Center has maintained focus on career preparation and employability for its students and continues to evolve to meet the demands of the ever-changing workforce. Having served more than 40,000 students, the Tech Center currently has 682 students enrolled in programs for the 2022-23 school year.

Virginia Beach high schools to compete in interscholastic lacrosse for first time this spring

For the very first time, Virginia Beach high schools will be playing lacrosse interscholastically starting this spring. With the Beach District season recently underway, each high school is fielding a varsity boys and a varsity girls team. On Tuesday, March 28, Kempsville and Ocean Lakes will play in a girls/boys doubleheader at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex (2044 Landstown Centre Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.) The Beach District schedule for all VBCPS schools begins on April 4.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (March 13, 2023) – The City of Virginia Beach, in partnership with the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, will hold a series of community listening sessions between March 25 and April 3. Residents will have an opportunity to provide their input on the City’s election system and how they elect their representatives. Feedback will be captured by the event moderators and provided to City Council in a final report.

Two Virginia Beach schools recognized as national models for college and career readiness

Great Neck and Salem Middle schools in Virginia Beach have once again received distinction as AVID National Demonstration Schools. This elite designation has been awarded to only 200 of 8,000 AVID schools in the United States and around the world. AVID National Demonstration Schools exhibit a college and career readiness culture through rigor and high expectations for all students throughout the school.

Non-VBCPS Employees

If you have created an account and submitted an employment application previously through the online application system, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools Online Application page and sign in with your Username and Password. If you are unable to recall your password, please use the Having trouble logging in feature found in the upper right corner of the login page.
  2. Go to the first page of your application – General Information – and scroll down to the bottom right side of this page.
  3. Beside the field Applicant Type make sure that Summer School appears. If not, select Change Type, then check Summer School, click Save and Next.
  4. Complete the additional fields for Summer School found on the Employment Preferences page: click Save and Next then Logout.

If you are a VBCPS employee and you do not have an account:

If you do not have an account, you must first create a new account and then complete and submit a Summer School Application. (Current employees with an VBCPS Standard Application should update and/or complete a Transfer Application.)

Submitting an Employment Application to the Department of Human Resources

Once an applicant begins entering data into the online application, whether it is complete or incomplete, as long as the applicant has clicked Save and Next found on the bottom of each page, the information is saved. All information entered into an online employment application will be forwarded to the Department of Human Resources.

Receiving employment consideration for the 2022 Summer School Program

In order to assure consideration for this particular year's summer school program, it is imperative applicants select the appropriate year from the drop down menu for the question "Please indicate the year(s) for which you are applying for a summer school position" which appears on the "Employment Preferences" page of the application. Failure to make a selection, or selecting the inappropriate year, will exclude an applicant from being included in staffing reports issued to summer administrators. In addition to responding to this question, it is mandatory applicants select at least one work assignment and location preference from the respective drop down selection menus.

Confirming a Summer School Employment Application is Complete

  • Upon entering ANY information into an online employment application, you will receive an e-mail. If your application is incomplete, this will be indicated in the e-mail.
  • Any time you access your online employment application and make a change/update, if the information is incomplete, you will be notified in an e-mail.
  • You may also check to see if your employment application is complete by clicking on the question mark icon found in the upper left-hand corner of your online application.

Selection of Summer School Staff

  • Selection of summer school staff will be ongoing and continue until all vacant positions are filled.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit completed applications early. However, applications will be accepted through the spring and early summer until all vacancies are filled.
  • Summer school principals select staff based on the qualifications, credentials, assignment, and location options found on the applicant's online employment application.
  • At the time an applicant is selected for summer employment he/she will be sent a contract via email offer. Each position is considered "open/vacant" until an accepted/signed contract has been returned for that position to the Department of Human Resources.
  • All contract offers are subject to sufficient student enrollment.
  • Once contracts are initially issued, all applicants who applied by the deadline will receive an e-mail sent to the e-mail address provided on their online application informing them whether or not they were selected for summer school employment as of that time.   • Non-VBCPS employees must meet all pre-employment requirements including background checks and Tuberculin test certification.
  • For non-VBCPS employees selected to teach summer school, a copy of a valid teaching license with endorsements must be provided at the time of hire. Failure to provide this information in a timely manner will delay the hiring process or may result in rescinding the contract offer.
  • The hourly pay rate for summer school teachers (which includes licensed Driver’s Education teachers) is $35.00 per hour. Total hours worked may vary based on program and other factors.
  • The list of summer school classified positions and their corresponding hourly pay rate is as follows:
     
    • Occupational and Physical Therapists - $30.52
    • Office Associates - $13.98
    • Teacher Assistants - $13.98
    • Security Assistants - $13.98
    • Interpreters - $20.16
    • Nurses (RN) - $32.00
    • Custodians - $11.60
    • Driver's Ed Paraprofessional - $17.55
