Summer Learning Boost for Middle School
Boost Opportunities for Science and Math courses will be offered during Summer 2024. Boosts are online preparation courses designed to build the skills necessary for success in the courses' students plan to take during the 2024-2025 school year. The courses will be asynchronous through Canvas with support available through FEV Tutors. at no cost to parents and/or guardians.
Students will join Boost opportunities through the appropriate course code located below.

Rising 6th grade students enroll in this summer bridge class to develop a deeper understanding of core mathematical concepts from fifth grade. The course is intended to minimize students’ loss of proficiency or improve proficiency of key 5th grade mathematical concepts. Students will explore fraction and decimal operations, order of operation, parts of a circle, transformations, number patterns, the Fundamental Counting Principle and algebraic equations.
This program consists of eight asynchronous lessons and is intended to have students complete one lesson per day. The modules are not moderated and are to be completed independently; however, all work is self-checking and students can progress through the course at their own pace.
Step-Up to 6th Grade Math is open to any rising 6th grade student but is highly recommended for students who earned an overall proficiency score of DP on the following fifth grade report card standards:
- Understands the ways of representing whole numbers and rational numbers and the relationships that exist among these numbers and number systems.
- Understands the meanings of additions, subtraction, multiplication and division, and computed using whole numbers and rational numbers.
Students do not earn a grade for this program as it is intended to help students build confidence in math content, skill and practices commonly taught in grade 5 mathematics and applied in Math 6.
GETTING TO KNOW PRE-ALGEBRA (MA3097)

This enrichment course is designed for students who are scheduled for Pre-Algebra in grade 6. The focus of this course is to strengthen students‘ number sense and computation skill in preparation to understand Pre-Algebra concepts. Students will explore the real number system, operation with rational numbers, comparing and ordering rational numbers, percent of change, proportional reasoning, linear equations and inequalities, angle relationships and area/perimeter of composite figures. Students who are enrolled in Advanced Math 6 or Advanced Math 7 are also eligible for this course.
This program consists of twelve asynchronous lessons and is intended to have students complete one lesson per day. The modules are not moderated and are to be completed independently; however, all work is self-checking and students can progress through the course at their own pace.
Students do not earn a grade for this program as it is intended to allow students to explore some of the content, skills and practices they will learn in Pre-Algebra.

The course is intended to help minimize students‘ loss of proficiency or improve proficiency of key 6th grade mathematical concepts. Students will explore comparing and ordering rational numbers, fraction and decimal operations, integer operations, order of operations, the Coordinate Plane, circle graphs, measure of center, proportional reasoning and algebraic equations/inequalities.

This bridge course is designed for students scheduled to take Algebra I next school year. The focus of this course is to strengthen the student’s pre-algebra skills to develop mathematical concepts and prepare students for Algebra I. Students will explore simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities and graphing lines. Through this course, students will build their confidence in mathematics, become problem solvers, communicate mathematically and learn to reason using mathematics.

This preparatory program is designed for students who are scheduled to enroll in Earth Science for the first time in the upcoming school year (middle school or high school). This program will help:
- Further students’ understanding of core Earth Science concepts, and
- Strengthen students’ foundational skills in the science and engineering practices they will need to be successful in Earth Science.
While students have a foundation of Earth Science topics in grade six science, the focus of the prep program will be to refresh basic content knowledge and skills.
