Who may register for online Summer School classes?
How do I determine if online learning is for me?
Visit our page “Is Online Learning for Me?” where families will find help to decide if the online learning environment is appropriate for your student.
How many online Summer School courses may I take?
Can I take an online course during summer school if my family has planned an extended family vacation (a week or more)?
The experience of many families is clear; THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA! Students who plan to be away during parts of the online course find it hard to successfully complete it. Even if you plan to continue working in the course while away, unexpected technical problems or time conflicts can make online work impossible. Virginia Beach Digital Campus courses are not built so that the student can "work ahead" before vacations or "catch up" after returning. All our online courses have weekly deadlines. Our teachers are not required to structure individual course calendars to accommodate vacations and extended student commitments.
Is it possible to withdraw from an online class and get a refund of the summer school tuition?
A refund is available ONLY if you withdraw before the first day of class. Requests for refunds must be made by e-mail. Because teachers must be hired in advance, no refunds will be honored after that date.

Online HPE Courses
Summer School Online Health and Physical Education (HPE) Grades 9 & 10 FAQ
- Who is eligible to take Online Health and Physical Education (HPE) Grades 9 and 10 during summer school?
- How does a student meet the physical requirements for the Online Health and PE class?
- How many hours of physical education are required?
- Is there a set schedule of face-to-face meetings for HPE courses?
- Is it possible to take online HPE if the student is traveling during summer as long as there is continuous internet access?
- What types of activities qualify for the physical education portion of the class?
- How will student grades be determined?
Who is eligible to take Online Health and Physical Education (HPE) Grades 9 and 10 during summer school?
All rising ninth-grade students are eligible to take online HPE I and rising tenth-grade students are eligible to take online HPE II. Students who need to complete one of the courses for credit recovery are also eligible. Certain academy students are ineligible. Please contact your academy before registering for an online summer school course.
How does a student meet the physical requirements for the Online Health and PE class?
How many hours of physical education are required?
Is there a set schedule of face-to-face meetings for HPE courses?
Online HPE I classes will require a face-to-face meeting for fitness testing and hands-on CPR training. The Online HPE II course requires a Driver ED final assessment that is proctored and a face-to-face fitness testing meeting. Your student's online HPE teacher will provide potential dates at the opening virtual meeting for the class.
Is it possible to take online HPE if the student is traveling during summer as long as there is continuous internet access?
Since this is an online course, students who have reliable access to an adequate computer and a high-speed internet connection should be able to travel while taking the course. However, our experience has shown that online students who plan to be away during parts of the course sometimes have difficulty successfully completing their work by their required due dates. Even if the intent is to continue working in the course while away, unexpected technical issues or changing motivation can affect the likelihood of success. Virginia Beach Digital Campus courses are not structured so that the student can "work ahead" before extended absences or "catch up" after returning. All of our online courses have weekly deadlines and interactions among coursemates. Teachers are not required to structure individual course calendars to accommodate vacations and extended student commitments.
What types of activities qualify for the physical education portion of the class?
How will student grades be determined?
The same grading guidelines will be followed whether the student is taking a Health and PE course online or face-to-face at a school. Completion and demonstration of content attainment of the online health component and successful participation in the individualized physical education portion of the class will each count 50 percent of the overall grade. Students will be responsible for a final assessment.
Courses & Registration
Digital Campus High School Summer Program Description
The Digital Campus high school summer program provides credit courses for high school students to accelerate their program of study or to take first time courses needed to stay on the proper graduation schedule. Students enrolling in a credit bearing VBDC course must complete a two-session summer program equal to one year of instruction in the regular school term to receive full credit. Students repeating a course they have previously failed may earn credit by completing a one-session summer course and should not register for full VBDC courses.
Virginia Beach Digital Campus online courses are taught in the two-session summer format for first time takers. All course offerings are dependent upon sufficient enrollment and the availability of suitable certified and endorsed instructors.
All VBCPS students who are taking a summer school course and are required to take the associated end-of-course (EOC) SOL test may be expected to participate in taking the SOL test during summer school, unless the student has already passed the test. Students must be enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools for the 2023-2024 school year before testing begins. These classes may require an EOC SOL test: English 11, VA/US History, World Geography, World History I and II, Algebra I, Algebra II/Trig, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry.
Dates: June 18 – August 6
