Throughout April, the Month of the Military Child, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) student artwork will be featured at Lynnhaven Mall. Now in its 11th year, "The Art of Being a Military Child" showcases students' artistic interpretations of what it means to be a military dependent, including deployments, transitions, patriotism, family and school. It is the culmination of a contest open to all VBCPS students to which more than 700 art entries were submitted.
Integrating Technology into the Curriculum
VBCPS is committed to using innovative instructional practices and supportive technologies. Distance Learning programs available to middle and high school students include:
Virginia Beach Digital Campus
Virginia Beach Digital Campus is a high school supplementary online program. During the regular school year, students enrolled in a full schedule of classes at their home school may take one or two classes from the convenience of their homes, working any day of the week, anytime of the day. Online courses may be a part of the standard course load or in addition to it. Students should consult their homeschool counselor about VBDC course requests and appropriate course choices. Online courses are also available during summer school subject to enrollment limits and availability of staff. Students taking these asynchronous online courses must manage their own work time to accomplish tasks according to the schedule set by the teacher. They must have on-demand access to a capable computer and high-speed internet access. Online students must be skilled readers and writers and must be very focused and disciplined. Student determination and parent/guardian support are essential.
The school-to-school Quality Connection program enables a class taught at one school to be broadcast to students at other schools. Students have the opportunity to participate in classes during the school day that cannot be offered at their home school due to low class enrollment. Instruction in this program is delivered through web conferencing systems in Distance Learning Labs in each high school and middle school.
