Our Guardrails

To make sure AI is used safely and fairly, we’ve set clear guardrails for students. The table below shows what families can expect from the school and how you can help reinforce these expectations at home.

What The School Does

How Families Can Partner

Prioritizes safety – Students are reminded never to share personal information with AI tools. Inappropriate and/or concerning usage will be flagged for review.

Protect privacy – Reinforce this at home by reminding your child to never give AI apps private details about themselves or others.

Uses only approved AI tools – Students may only access AI tools that have been reviewed and approved by VBCPS.

Reinforce at home – Remind your child to stick with the tools their teacher approves, even if other apps are available on personal devices.

Limits access to the school day – AI tools are turned off on school devices from 3:00 PM - 7:00 AM to prevent unsupervised use on class assignments.

Support consistency – Encourage your child to follow the same rules at home on class assignments, even if they can access AI on another device.

Provides clear expectations for use – AI use is always introduced with clear directions, so students know how and when to use it.

Ask about class directions – When your child uses AI, check in: “What did your teacher say about how you should use it?”

Teaches responsible use – Students are expected to be honest about when they use AI, and to keep their own ideas at the center.

Promote honesty – Talk with your child about the value of doing their own thinking and being upfront with teachers when AI has been part of the process.
