Digital Literacy

Welcome to the VBCPS AI Guide for Families

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is preparing every student to be future-ready. As part of our Compass to 2030 Strategic Framework, we are helping students build the skills outlined in the Future-Ready Profile — becoming lifelong learners, critical thinkers, resilient individuals, collaborative communicators, responsible leaders, and culturally competent citizens.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the emerging technologies shaping the world our students are entering. As part of digital literacy and citizenship education across K–12, students are taught that AI can support their thinking but cannot replace it. They are expected to think critically, evaluate information, and contribute their own original ideas. In VBCPS, we are preparing students to understand and use AI in ways that are safe, ethical, and purposeful.

AI will never replace the role of teachers, or the importance of human judgment, creativity, and relationships. Instead, it can enhance learning by helping students:

  • Strengthen skills like critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Brainstorm and explore ideas in new ways
  • Discover innovative pathways and careers for their future
