Governor's STEM* & Technology Academy

The Landstown Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy features a curriculum designed for students with a keen interest in and talent for technology. Students attending the Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy take core academic courses as well as technology elective courses from two major career strands: STEM Engineering Technology and Information technology. Students accepted into the Governor’s STEM Academy are required to take specific science, math, English, and Academy electives to satisfy the requirements of this specialized program.

The Landstown Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy combines academic and technical training that prepares students for a variety of post-graduation choices: college/university studies, advanced technology training, or entry-level jobs. They will be eligible for either a Standard or Advanced Studies diploma. Students may also qualify for the Board of Education’s Seal of Advanced Mathematics and Technology depending on their course selections.

Admission to the program is through application only. Applications are due in January for the following school year and may be obtained and completed online. Current eighth and ninth graders may apply to enter the Landstown Governor's STEM Academy. Placement into the Governor's STEM & Technology Academy is dependent on positive teacher recommendations, above average grades, and a thoughtful essay not to exceed 400 words. The essay should include: How does the theme of the Academy fit with your interests and future goals? What experiences, skills and talents will you bring to the academy?

Program Components


The Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy features a cutting-edge elective curriculum especially designed for highly motivated students who exhibit an affinity for technology. Students have multiple opportunities for taking advanced courses, participating in the dual enrollment program with Tidewater Community College, and sampling special programs featuring mentorships and internships. The innovative learning environment of the Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy also provides students the added advantage of combining academic and technical training that prepares them for a variety of post-graduate choices: entry-level jobs, advanced technology training, or college or university studies. Students are drawn from across the city and may choose either the Standard Program or the Advanced Studies Program. Academic choices open to students are varied and range from pursuing multiple industry certifications to obtaining credits towards an associate's degree from TCC, in conjunction with a high school diploma.

Students select one strand in which to focus their academic studies completing a comprehensive sequence that will prepare them for the appropriate associated industry certification(s). Students may select to dual or triple strand, maximizing their academic experience and skills learned. Analytical problem solving approaches to real world situations are emphasized in classroom instruction, as well as hands-on applications in a 21st century learning environment. Students are exposed to STEM-enriched curricula and afforded multiple opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills through the many projects they complete and competitions in which they participate. Each strand is complemented with a student organization that reinforces leadership skills, collaborative learning and community service. Additionally, if eligibility requirements are met, students may partake in the National Technical Honor Society.

Program of Study

Two major career strands – Information Technology and STEM Engineering Technology – comprise the program of study. Each strand consists of various CTE four-year pathways designed to develop and refine specific skills and ability to prepare students for the 21st century world. Students must be enrolled in an Academy elective at Landstown each year. Additionally, if dual stranding, a minimum of three of these electives must be from each strand sequence to complete the Technology Academy program of study. Students attending the Governor's STEM Academy must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Students attending the Technology Academy must maintain a 2.0 GPA.
