School Board of the City of Virginia Beach
Regulation 6-8.1

Controversial Issues

To implement the board's policy dealing with controversial issues in the classroom, the following guidelines are to be observed:

  1. Controversial issues should not be taught, but rather students should be provided with opportunities for their study.
  2. Controversial topics should be dealt with as impartially and objectively as possible.
  3. All such topics should be handled in a manner suited to the range of knowledge, maturity, and competence of your students.
  4. Teaching materials dealing with all possible aspects of the topics should be readily available.
  5. When the teacher is in doubt about the advisability of taking up a given "hot" topic, he/she should consult with the principal.
