For the 16th time, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement for providing music access and education to all students.

VBCPS is one of only 7% of school districts across the nation to receive this prestigious award. Additionally, VBCPS is one of only 17% of all school districts in Virginia to receive this recognition.

“VBCPS continues to provide a top-notch music education filled with enriching experiences for our students, thanks to the expertise and dedication of our staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson Jr. “Many of our students find their sense of belonging within the school community by getting involved in our music programs, and we’re happy to help students develop a well-rounded set of skills to support a successful future.”

The designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

VBCPS Performing Arts Coordinator John H. Brewington said, “I want to thank the students and our music teachers, for making music education a priority in VBCPS. We also want to thank our central office administration and our arts partners in the community for their unwavering support and commitment to ensure that our students have the opportunity to reach their full potential and to grow personally through music.”

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, VBCPS answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by the leading arts educational research firm, WolfBrown.
