For the 2026-27 school year, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) would receive approximately $18.9 million in formula grant funds through programs authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA).

These measures provide a more detailed view of school quality and student outcomes across the state.
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released Standard of Learning (SOL) pass rate data on Aug. 27. The overall SOL pass rates for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) exceeded the state pass rates in all subject areas.

Kathleen Brown, chair of the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach, has been selected to join the second cohort of the Virginia Hunt State Policy Fellows, a bipartisan program of The Hunt Institute that brings together locally elected officials from across the state to engage in productive dialogue on pressing issues in education policy.
Through this program, fellows will convene for a series of sessions designed to deepen their understanding of critical education topics, including early childhood education, K-12 systems, postsecondary attainment and workforce development. They will engage with experts, legislators and educators to identify strategies that improve student outcomes and strengthen education systems.
“Virginia Beach has one of the best public school systems in the Commonwealth, and we should always be looking for ways to make it even better,” said Kathleen Brown. “The Hunt Institute cohort is an opportunity to share the innovative work happening in our schools, learn what’s working in other communities across Virginia, and bring those lessons back to Virginia Beach. I am honored to join fellow representatives from across Virginia to explore solutions that help students succeed and strengthen opportunities for students, teachers and families in Virginia Beach.”
