Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) has once again received national recognition for its commitment to providing students with access and excellence in the arts. For the 17th time, VBCPS has been named a Best Community for Music Education by The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation honors school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing equitable access to music education for all students.

VBCPS is among just 8% of school divisions nationwide and among just 28 divisions statewide to earn this designation, placing it in the top 21% in Virginia.

“Receiving this recognition for the 17th consecutive year reflects VBCPS’ enduring commitment to ensuring every student has access to a high-quality music education,” said Superintendent Dr. Donald E. Robertson Jr. “Music does more than teach performance skills — it helps students build confidence and find a sense of belonging within their school community. I am grateful for our dedicated music educators and supportive families who inspire excellence and create meaningful opportunities for our students, helping them become future ready through experiences that encourage creativity, collaboration and self-expression.”

Meredith Brookman, performing arts coordinator for VBCPS, shared, “Music education thrives in VBCPS because of the dedication of our students, music teachers and a community that values the arts. With the continued support of our central office leadership and arts partners, we are ensuring meaningful opportunities for every student to grow, express themselves and reach their full potential through music.”

To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education designation, VBCPS submitted detailed information about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instructional time, facilities, program support and community music-making opportunities. Submissions were verified by school officials and reviewed by WolfBrown, a leading arts education research organization.
