Virginia Beach Police and Fire Departments and Medical Transport
Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center
The Public Safety Course developed by this partnership introduces students to the occupational areas of police, fire, and emergency medical training (EMT). This two year, six credit course serves to identify and train students with an interest in public safety careers. Since 2002, the Virginia Beach Police and Fire Departments have contributed $102,000 to this program, along with use of facilities, including the Virginia Beach Obstacle Course. Students in the program competed in the Skills USA District 1 competition in February 2004, and placed 1 st , 2 nd , and 3 rd in Latent Fingerprint Recovery, Basic Accident Investigation, and Domestic Violence Investigation. Twenty-two out of twenty-five students have qualified for certification in the fields of CPR and emergency first aid, and have been afforded the opportunity to witness, first hand, the assorted career opportunities available to them. Through this program, students are prepared to enter the Virginia Beach Police and Fire Departments, while these departments simultaneously create a pool of qualified, trained future employees. This partnership is truly a "Win-Win!"
