Since 1993, "Pipeline to the Community," a school-readiness program
for preschool children and their parents, has been funded by Virginia Natural
Gas, with curriculum designed and delivered by Virginia Wesleyan College volunteer
education majors. Guidance counselor, Marlene Durazo, coordinates the program,
now in its fifth year of operation. The school provides staff, physical space,
buses and instructional materials with the goal of helping children make a smooth
transition into kindergarten through SOL-related activities designed to establish
socialization skills and positive attitudes towards school and leaning. Concurrently,
the Pipeline children's parents/grandparents learn more about how to be positively
involved in their children's educations. From all accounts, "Pipeline to
the Community" is an effective conduit for linking children, parents, school,
and community.
