Virginia Beach Department of Mental Health
and Plaza Middle
School
Partially funded by a grant from the Virginia Beach Schools Education Foundation,
these partners together offer "Breakin' the Chain" and "Fatherhood/
Manhood" programs to middle school students at Plaza. These programs are
designed to teach life skills, promote anti-violence among youth, and provide
adolescents with skills to resist negative influences. Specifically, the programs
teach stress and anger management and conflict resolution, encourage leadership
among peers, and link participants with interns from Norfolk State and Old Dominion
Universities in mentoring relationships. The positive impact of this program
on participants can be measured by both improved grades and behavior. This partnership
is responsible for a "chain" reaction of positive performance.
