Project HOPE with the
Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia,
the Police Athletic League, Seatack Recreation Center, VBCPS Transportation Services,
and W.T. Cooke Elementary School

At Cooke Elementary, Project HOPE sponsors the Anchor Club, an after school program that targets homeless students who reside in hotels and motels at the Virginia Beach oceanfront and attend Cooke. In support of this program, a coalition of city, school and community agencies provide needed services to this marginalized population. Through Project HOPE, children receive no-cost, supervised after school care, homework assistance, access to a recreation center, cultural programming, and hot nutritional meals. Additionally, families of these students benefit from interventions and referrals to community resources by the school social worker. Many volunteers, including area youths from middle schools and scout troops, work together to meet the needs of the participants. Through the Anchor Club, Project HOPE not only provides hope, but safety, self-esteem, confidence and improved academic performance, helping to anchor students for a lifetime of success.
