Model Partnerships
2002-2003 School Year

Glenwood Elementary School and Salem High School This school-to-school SOL-driven "Reading Buddies" partnership is the inspiration of Salem's Reading Specialist, Joan K. Bateman, and is partially funded by a grant for the Virginia Beach Schools Education Foundation. She designed this program to provide opportunities for high school remedial readers and their kindergarten "buddies" at Glenwood Elementary to improve their phonemic awareness levels, as well as their fluency and comprehension skills. Each quarter, Salem High remedial reading students select two books and prepare related engagement strategies, activities or games that they then share with their respective kindergarten buddies on field trips to Glenwood Elementary. They even donate these materials to their host kindergarten teachers upon their departure. The writing is on the wall: both groups of students benefit academically, emotionally and socially from this structured reading mentor relationship.
