Partners in Education
2001 Exemplary Partnership Award Winner

United Jewish Federation and Lynnhaven
and Birdneck Elementary Schools

The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater enjoys partnerships with two Virginia Beach schools: Birdneck and Lynnhaven Elementaries. Students in both schools reap the benefits of the Federation's Be A Reader or BEAR program of tutoring in reading.

The BEAR program is a joint project of the United Jewish/African American Federation of Tidewater. Its purpose is to help children acquire a love of books and reading that will lead to academic achievement and personal success.

At Birdneck Elementary, where BEAR began this school year, Reading Resource Teacher Linda Pascarosa helped train tutors who were paired with second graders. Tutors and classroom teachers communicated often regarding student progress to be sure students received the help they needed.

At Lynnhaven Elementary, the BEAR program has been in place for two years. Twenty-seven volunteers are paired with as many students, providing help with reading skills and even subscriptions to Highlights Magazine.
