HUSH and Salem High School
An official partnership between Salem High School and Dr. Adolph Brown an Brown & Associates-- A non-profit organization specializing in young people and those who seek to help them--
was established in 1999. This partnership established HUSH (Hampton University Students Helping), a mentorship program that paired a university students with students from Salem High. This mentorship program gave Salem High students tools to improve their academic performance, attendance, and behavior, strategies to use in dealing with anger and conflict resolution, as well as clearer goals for their own futures as students. Twenty eight mentor/student pairs were established, and the HUSH program is being considered as a model to emulate in other schools. Salem High students met weekly with their mentors, many of whom are studying for degrees in helping professions and gained valuable field experience themselves.
