Meet our 2009 Volunteers of the Year


Adult Learning Center - Cindy Carscallen

As a reading tutor for almost a decade for adult students who speak languages other than English, Cindy is a reliable and dedicated volunteer who is making a difference at the ALC. "Her energy and optimism are contagious and help enrich the ESOL program."

Alanton Elementary - Kristin Lineberry

As PTA membership chair, Kristin led an "inspiring" campaign to reach the school's 100% goal. She helped start a WatchDOGS program and leads fundraising efforts. She always "exceeds expectations" in support of Alanton's students and staff.

Arrowhead Elementary - Susan Corey

The "willing spirit, kind heart, and support" of this PTA President may be found throughout Arrowhead. A welcoming face at the security desk, Susan also helps teachers with copies, serves as a room mother, and organizes the Santa's Breakfast event.

Bayside Elementary - Robin Cacese

Described as "dedicated and hardworking," Robin helps with activities, assists teachers in the classroom, and then asks what she can do at home to be helpful. They don't know how this exemplary volunteer finds the time to do all that she does!

Bayside High - Susie Dunn

This proud '79 Marlin will have her daughter join her as a fellow BHS graduate in June. Organizing the Homecoming Alumni tent, selling tickets, and chairing the used book sale make Susie one of Student Activities' most valuable volunteers.

Bayside Middle - Janice McMillian

This volunteer "has a positive attitude that spreads joy!" Helping with fundraisers, teacher appreciation projects, PTA events, and the Biggest Loser program, Janice "has been the backbone of the PTA for the last three years with her boundless efforts."

Bayside Tri-Campus - Pandora Johnson

Praised as a "true gem" for her leadership of the GEMS program since 2002, Pandora is a positive role model and generous volunteer who is making a difference at the Tri-Campus.

Birdneck Elementary - Cindy Boswell

Described as an "orchestra conductor, directing all of the volunteer efforts at Birdneck," Cindy has devoted hundreds of hours supporting the school. Special events, library assistance, volunteer coordination, PTA Treasurer - "she does it all!"

Brandon Middle - Brian Stough

This naval officer and father of four sons is always busy behind the scenes. Stocking concession stands, manning the school store, chaperoning dances, and helping with school beautification, Brandon is grateful for this outstanding volunteer.

Brookwood Elementary - Retta Bertges

This pediatric nurse is a dependable volunteer who demonstrates "commitment and passion" for helping children. Helping every week in the clinic, classrooms, and at PTA functions, Retta also mentors VBCPS TCE nursing students.

Center for Effective Learning - Tamara Wilson

Dedicating hours of her time each week to support students, Tamara is a very valuable CEL volunteer. She works with students every day as an Algebra Readiness tutor to ensure their success!

Centerville Elementary - Emily Cass

An advocate for all students, this volunteer helps in classrooms and with various events. The Magic Shows she organizes are favorites of students, and she has helped with PTA membership and enrichment programs. Emily makes Centerville "shine and sparkle!"

Christopher Farms Elementary - Michelle Schmidt

In charge of programs, Michelle "has diligently sought out the very best in instructional and cultural programs" for CFES students. Known to volunteer many hours at home as well as being very active at the school, the Colts know they can count on her support.

College Park Elementary - Kathleen Nevoraski

This "Box Top Queen" wears many hats and a smile that will “make your day.” She has boundless energy and takes on any task — large or small! Her dedication and love for children are shown in her caring words, passionate spirit, and commitment to College Park.

Cooke Elementary - Archie Hart

Even after working 12-hour shifts through the night/morning, this volunteer "enters Cooke with a smile on his face and ready to do what he can to help." Copying, filing, organizing, and more – he can be counted on to lend a hand "every week without fail!"

Corporate Landing Elementary - Jennifer Ward

This "reliable, dependable, and dedicated" volunteer may be found copying, collating, or changing bulletin boards to free up teachers for instruction. Helping at special events, she "always brings a smile," and her work is greatly appreciated by CLES.

Corporate Landing Middle - Cindy Lynn Francis

Cindy offers invaluable administrative support in the main office, guidance, and library. Whether she is copying, mailing, or distributing the PTA newsletter, Cindy is "always seen with a smile" as she helps others to make their day a little easier.

Cox High - Susan Cormier

A reliable and valued volunteer in the library, Susan is "always giving above and beyond with a smile on her face." Working with the school newsletter, Booster Club, and at special events are among her many contributions to the Falcons.

Creeds Elementary - Tanna Jones

The ultimate volunteer who is "an integral part of the school community," Tanna does it all. Known for her "green" efforts at Creeds, she also helps in classrooms, main office, and with multiple PTA programs and activities. She's always ready to help!

Fairfield Elementary - Misu Brown

Known as a "jack of all trades," this volunteer helps in the production room on a daily basis while managing PTA Membership, Movie Nights, Multicultural Night, and the Fall Festival. Her fun events for Fairfield's families make her an "invaluable asset."

First Colonial High - Cindy Focke

For over eight years, Cindy has "consistently made significant contributions to FCHS." As if chairing the Community Service Program, Battle of the Bands, and concession sales weren't enough, she added Homecoming float construction to the list this year.

Glenwood Elementary - Sandra Gonzalez

A faithful volunteer who "shows a love for Glenwood students and staff," Sandra contributes to the school's family atmosphere. From the cafeteria and clinic to the copy room and classrooms, "she is a positive influence, and her help is invaluable."

Great Neck Middle - Nancy Blackwood

As her five children have attended GNMS, Nancy volunteers each week to support the school. From the PTA Executive Board to spirit wear, staff appreciation, student dances, and Dollars for Scholars, "if there is an activity at the school, she is involved!"

Green Run Elementary - Clare Davis

A retired GRES teacher, Clare "works tirelessly" to organize and promote the Accelerated Reader program and to oversee the AR prize store. "She truly cares about students and, even in her retirement, is dedicated to helping them succeed."

Green Run High - Fred Hampton

As the president and treasurer of the GRHS Booster Club, this couple spearheads sports season kick-off events, concession sales, and sports award nights. "Their tireless efforts make Green Run a better school for all students."

Hermitage Elementary - Josephine Thomas

This volunteer "has become a grandmother to all of the HES Vikings." She helps in the cafeteria every day, knows students by their first names, and gives hugs of support to all. Josie is "a humble, gracious lady who truly displays a servant's heart.

Holland Elementary - Tory Madison

Assisting daily with math labs, guided reading, award ceremonies, chorus practice, or field trips, this volunteer's "easy-going, happy nature has endeared her to students and staff." There is no limit to the talents that Tory shares with Holland.

Independence Middle - Robert Carrington

Interested in supporting students when he moved to the area, this volunteer now has the Eagles soaring. Serving as a mentor, assistant basketball coach, and cafeteria monitor, he is "a role model who is generous and passionate" about student success.

Indian Lakes Elementary - Kim Richman

Whether it's Fall Festival, Santa's Workshop, Field Day, Bingo Night, or PTA-sponsored classroom programs, Kim is "always organizing, keeping track of jobs or getting the job done herself." She is "dependable for any and all endeavors of the PTA."

John B. Dey Elementary - Michelle Obetz

Every school needs a volunteer like Michelle! Described as creative, organized and full of boundless energy, the Gulls appreciate her "can-do attitude." Organizing festivals, breakfasts, and other special programs are among the many ways she shines.

Kellam High - Bill Woodward

Every week, this volunteer may be found offering his industry expertise to Kellam electronics students. He helped install and lead instruction on a new software program, and his "wonderful rapport with the students" makes him a Knights volunteer.

Kemps Landing Magnet - Laura Lowe

This PTA President is described as being "innovative, personable, positive, and dependable." Whether she's doing clerical work or planning information nights, the staff says, "She makes our jobs easier and brings a sense of family to our school."

Kempsville Elementary - Harold Smith

Leading the WatchDOGS program is one of the many ways this grandfather supports KES. He assists teachers, monitors the cafeteria, greets visitors, makes repairs, and helps the librarians. "He takes his sense of humor and smiling face everywhere he goes!"

Kempsville High - Cindy Mosley

Described as an "outstanding example" for others, Cindy works with the yearbook, guidance, Booster Club, PTSA newsletter, staff recognition, and exam concessions. The Chiefs appreciate her tireless efforts to make Kempsville a better place to be.

Kempsville Meadows Elementary - Kathryn Callahan

For nine years, Kathryn has been a "positive and productive" volunteer. Serving on the PTA Board, running KIDS Bank, supporting parents' learning, and working with Destination ImagiNation teams make her an invaluable part of the KMES team.

Kempsville Middle - Kirsten Kelly

Seen almost daily at KMS, this PTA President oversees the intramural conditioning program, helps with fundraising, and fills faculty mailboxes with birthday treats. She "leads by example and enriches PTA pride in being part of an organization that works."

King's Grant Elementary - Kathleen Zirnheld

A volunteer at KGES for a decade who has worn many hats, Kathleen also manages the school bookstore. "She is ready bright and early, greeting students with a smile." She helps with copies, assists in classrooms, and "goes the extra mile for everyone."

Kingston Elementary - Karen Heenan

You can literally see Karen's volunteer work at Kingston. She created an eight-foot, three-dimensional castle in the fourth-grade hallway and made reading come to life. Her artistic talents touch every aspect of the school. "Her dedication is amazing!"

Landstown Elementary - Katrina Huddleston

The grandmother visits from Richmond every week and volunteers in the library and assists teachers in classrooms. "She shines brighter than any star and shows amazing selfless acts of kindness." She loves Landstown, and they say she's something special!

Landstown High - Kim Sendzik

For over nine years, the Eagles have had this volunteer's support. She is the Athletic Association president, donates her nursing expertise for sports physicals, and serves as volunteer coach. "Her enthusiasm and positive attitude are contagious!"

Landstown Middle - Karen Ratner

As PTA Treasurer, Karen is the "go-to lady" for spirit wear and concessions. Described as "dependable, responsible, and compassionate," she helps with any and all PTA activities and school events. She is a leader who puts LMS students and community first.

Larkspur Middle - Susan Smith

Stepping up to fill the role of PTA President this year, this volunteer is leading Larkspur with her new ideas and organization. A former PTA Treasurer and newsletter chairperson, Susan continues to show a willingness to work hard and serve."

Linkhorn Park Elementary - Sally Baust

The Lions say Sally is "remarkable, extremely dependable, well prepared, organized, and a natural leader!" Known as the "Field Day Lady" to many students, they also love the parent vs. staff kickball game and students vs. staff basketball game she organizes.

Luxford Elementary - Tom Knorr

Described as "the hardest working person in our school," Tom volunteers in the library, during PE classes, and in the cafeteria each week. You may also find him helping with gardening or walking with students on the Dragon Trail. He goes "above and beyond!"

Lynnhaven Elementary - Carole Demarah

Lynnhaven first-grade teachers say that "Carole is truly an asset to our team." On a daily basis, she "lightens the load" for many LES teachers by helping with copies, collating, and assisting in classrooms. "She is absolutely wonderful!"

Lynnhaven Middle - Nancy Rosen

This volunteer's creative ideas and work ethic have impressed all. She made school ornaments to raise money for scholarships, painted a mural, planned a successful Silent Auction, and supports many school events. She works with "graciousness and flair!"

Malibu Elementary - Jessica Fullwood

This couple introduced Destination ImagiNation to Malibu this year. They ambitiously fielded four teams, with one team placing third at the state tournament. Thanks to the efforts of the Fullwoods, creative problem solving is on the rise at Malibu!

New Castle Elementary - Dari O'Brien

Dari is a "one-of-a-kind volunteer who gives 110%." Whether she's helping a teacher, organizing a monstrous fundraiser, selling raffle tickets, or making smoothies for teachers during teacher in-service week, she is there "with a big smile on her face."

North Landing Elementary - Lori Bridges

This PTA Hospitality Chair is "constantly spoiling teachers and staff with great food and treats." That is, when she is not helping with events like Beach Blanket Bingo, Fiesta for 100, car washes, volunteer breakfasts, or helping in her classrooms.

Ocean Lakes Elementary - Susan Hall

Each month, Susan creates artistic displays that brighten the school foyer and are admired by all who enter the school. "Her artistic talent is a wonderful gift" that everyone at Ocean Lakes enjoys.

Ocean Lakes High - Susan George

A three-year veteran of Gradfest planning, this volunteer also serves as PTA Vice President, helps with guidance department events, and leads fundraising efforts for the boys' soccer program. "A more dedicated volunteer would be hard to find."

Old Donation Center - Jill Campbell

In addition to her work as PTA Reflections Chair, Jill introduced the Artist in Residence and Original Works programs to ODC. "She seeks no recognition other than to see the smiles of the children," and her dedication and energy keep everyone smiling at ODC.

Parkway Elementary - Thomas Bailey, Jr.

A devoted role model to our young students, this volunteer helps at Parkway three days a week, seven hours each day. A mentor to the Panther Pride Boys' Club, he was also a fan favorite during the staff vs. student basketball game

Pembroke Elementary - Nicole Chilldres

A "generous and dependable" volunteer in Pembroke's library, this PTA Board member shelves books, works at the circulation desk, and helps with the Book Fair. Her children graduated from PES, but she’s still busy with membership getting others involved.

Pembroke Meadows Elementary - Sarah Branch

This "dedicated and involved parent" regularly creates hallway displays to showcase student learning and can always be counted on to help make copies or assist with special events. PMES is thankful for the "countless hours and tremendous support" she provides.

Plaza Elementary - Michelle Bershers

Books are this volunteer's passion, so she puts her all into making sure that Plaza’s Book Fairs have flair – from recruiting volunteers to bringing baked goods. Her efforts allowed the school to purchase a book for every PES student this year. "She’s wonderful!"

Plaza Middle - Rose DeLumpa

This PTA President is praised for "instilling a sense of community and pride at Plaza Middle." Her new Bring Your Family to School Week was "phenomenal," and her attitude and dedication make her a "ray of sunshine" in the school.

Point O'View Elementary - Patricia "Louie" McIver

The Santa Breakfast event was a huge success this year thanks to this volunteer. She involved high school students and a military command to create a winter wonderland for students and their families. Her "unrivaled dedication" inspires others!

Princess Anne Elementary - Lisa Whitney

Thanks to Lisa's revamped spirit items sales, the PTA was able to help buy several SMART boards for classrooms. Her talents have "transformed the newsletter" and helped PAES "go green" with its distribution. "She is fantastic and enthusiastic!"

Princess Anne High - Donald Marcari

Mentoring students in PA's Medical & Legal Society, this volunteer prepares teams for Mock Trial competitions and shares his legal expertise. Described as a "great role model" by students and staff, the Cavaliers are grateful for his time and dedication.

Princess Anne Middle - Karen Hinton

From the fall Open House to the 8th grade celebration in June, this PTA President's leadership "has been a valuable asset" to PAMS. At a moment's notice, she is ready and willing to help with any task to support students and staff. "An incredible volunteer!"

Providence Elementary - Deb Holman

Known for her wonderful organization of after school clubs, staff say, "She makes our school a wonderful place for our children." In addition to finding other volunteers to share their talents with students, she volunteers in the library, main office, and classrooms.

Red Mill Elementary - Cheri Seery

This "fun, creative, and dependable" volunteer organized March Mini Courses for nearly 700 students. She enlisted parent and community volunteers to help, and she brings the same enthusiasm and leadership to all of her work at Red Mill.

Rosemont Elementary - Jim Johnson

A retired police officer, Jim's work "has had a tremendous impact on the academic success of many Rosemont students." A dedicated volunteer in the library, students "know, love, and respect him," and he always has friendly words and smiles for them.

Rosemont Forest Elementary - Deborah Armstrong

Since 1995, the school has benefited from this volunteer's time and generosity with her gardening and much more. While her children left RFES long ago, she still makes sure that everything continues to bloom in the flower beds and Memorial Garden.

Salem Elementary - Dawn Talbert

This PTA President is the "backbone" of Salem's PTA. Her talents, energy, and focus have helped SES offer students and families a multitude of positive family-oriented fun. She rallies support for activities and "sets an example for other volunteers."

Salem High - Tim Talley

As Vice President of the Athletic Booster Club, Tim is an "above and beyond" volunteer who manages concessions, recruits additional volunteers, assists with timing at athletic events, and supports the Sun Devils however he can.

Salem Middle - Francesca Ketchum

With "enthusiasm beyond measure," Francesca planned a successful, creative membership drive and helps wherever needed. From the Book Fair and Parents' Day to making copies and assisting teachers, she is an "all-purpose volunteer!"

Seatack Elementary - Marcie Burden

As VIE Coordinator, Marcie is "constantly thinking of new ways to recruit volunteers." She coordinates volunteer days, set up a parent room, and does what she can to make PTA events successful. Seatack values her new ideas and leadership.

Shelton Park Elementary - Janet Jimenez

Shelton Park staff can always count on this volunteer to assist with copies, computer graphics, and lamination – whatever the task Janet is ready to devote her time to helping others. "She is an asset to our school community in every way."

Strawbridge Elementary - Joni Dunn

As VP for Membership, Joni "ran an incredible membership drive!" Her innovative ideas and attention to detail are noteworthy. Additionally, she coordinates student recognition ceremonies and is always available to help the faculty in any way.

Tallwood Elementary - Keith Storm

For more than a decade, Keith has given "countless hours of service to improve the quality of life and spirit at Tallwood." He may be found before and after school working with students, assisting teachers, or setting up for activities. The TES family thanks him!

Tallwood High - Shelli Stough

Shelli's "tireless dedication" and membership management resulted in hundreds of new PTSA members. In addition to volunteering at two other schools, she leads Tallwood's Grad Night activities and serves on the School Planning Council.

Technical and Career Education Center - Frank Viola

This volunteer is sharing his wealth of knowledge with TCE automotive students. "His consistency, passion for the educational process, and love of the automotive service industry" are among the many reasons TCE applauds this valuable volunteer.

Thalia Elementary - Jennifer Saunders

The "dedication, professionalism, and creativity" of this PTA Treasurer are invaluable to Thalia. From room parent to PTA Board member, she's helped with talent shows, holiday parties, and school special events. She’s a "go-to girl" for whom Thalia is grateful.

Thoroughgood Elementary - Sandy Manifold

Selfless with her time, this volunteer helps every day at Thoroughgood. Selling spirit wear, working on bulletin boards, copying, cutting, laminating, planning events, the list goes on and on. Her dedication and energy are admired by many!

Three Oaks Elementary - Adriana Rodriguez

Adriana "jumps in wherever there is a need without being asked." She volunteers in the cafeteria several days a week, serves as a room parent, and helps with PTA and school events. She is "hardworking, positive, and fun to be around."

Trantwood Elementary - Annette Houston

Always a leader in helping the PTA and the school, this VIE Coordinator is an integral part of organizing volunteers for the school's science lab. "Dependable and welcoming," Annette is also a valuable room mother who is organized and helpful.

Virginia Beach Central Academy - Vivian Peña

VBCA says that this mentor's efforts "will surely inspire them to want to become more, do more, be more." She is helping students set their sights on success in college and on futures that involve being productive, lifelong learners.

Virginia Beach Middle - Suzy Olesko

A top Seahawk volunteer, Suzy "can always be counted on" to help with activities and promote parent involvement. Her creation of Volunteer of the Month yard signs are a hit, as are her enthusiasm and leadership.

White Oaks Elementary - Shirley Frese

Described as the "epitome of excellence in volunteerism," this volunteer gives from the heart. She's like a grandmother to students and helps in the cafeteria, library, and workroom. She also cares for the plants and fish in "Shirley’s Pond" in the foyer.

Windsor Oaks Elementary - Rich Cheatham

Leading the school's new WatchDOGS program, assisting with the parent newsletter, and volunteering in classrooms, are among the reasons Windsor Oaks values this volunteer. He "leads by example," works hard, and is a role model for others.

Windsor Woods Elementary - Chris Purkiss

This library volunteer "handles a variety of tasks with ease." Whether it's updating the Accelerated Reader bulletin board, helping with Box Tops, or assisting with Math Day, Chris is "always on call whenever she is needed."

Woodstock Elementary - Heidi Looby

A tenured PTA Board member, Heidi has been involved with membership, hospitality, newsletter production, box top/receipt collections, fundraisers, and more. She initiated afterschool enrichment classes, bringing exciting programs to WES students.
