2007 Teacher Orientation and
Continuous Learning Institute (TOCLI)

Each August, new Virginia Beach City Public School teachers gather at Ocean Lakes High School for the Teacher Orientation and Continuous Learning Institute, otherwise known as TOCLI. The 2007 edition of TOCLI will begin on Monday, August 20 and will conclude on Thursday, August 23.

The purpose of TOCLI is to provide the following for brand new teachers and veteran teachers new to Virginia Beach:

• An introduction to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, along with a discussion of our mission and core values
• An overview of the curriculum in each subject area, provided by curriculum coordinators and teacher specialists from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction
• A brief introduction to two classroom management systems currently in use in Virginia Beach classrooms: Dr. Fred Jones’ Tools for Teaching and Dr. Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline
• A glimpse of the FISH! Philosophy that is presented to all employees new to VBCPS, intended to help create a climate replete with energy, a passion for work and positive attitudes, along with great customer service
• An opportunity to talk to representatives from the school division’s Benefits Office, Student Leadership, Department of Technology, Office of Organizational Development, and the Office of Programs for Exceptional Children at booths in the lobby at Ocean Lakes High School
• An overview of how the brain learns, coupled with brain-based teaching strategies that can be used in classrooms
• An opportunity for new teachers to meet and work with their Teacher Mentors in a structured format on Thursday, August 23, at their home school

We look forward to meeting all our new teachers at Ocean Lakes High School on August 20. On each of the four days, the conference begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and concludes by 4:00 p.m. Registration on all four days runs from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. and is accompanied by a continental breakfast. Lunch is provided for participants on the first three days of the conference.

Participants will receive a conference tote bag, an 8 ½ X 11 portfolio with lined note pad, a TOCLI pen, books written by the presenters, and much more in the way of educational materials.

Day 4 of TOCLI, Thursday, August 23, will include time for new teachers to meet with their teacher mentors at their home school.
