The Adult Learning Center’s On-Line Registration website was activated on January 22nd. The website is linked to ALC’s management system and allows users to create student profiles, browse current course offereings, and register for selected classes. It is reported that there have been 1,973 hits on the site since its launch --and 225 course registrations have been recorded.
On February 2nd, students from Bayside High School had the opportunity to participate in a job shadowing experience. Staff from the school’s new partner, Armada Hoffler, hosted the students as part of “Ground Hog Job Shadow Day”.
During the week of February 9th – 13th, Ocean Lakes High School held a Founders Week Celebration in honor of the school’s 10 year anniversary. “Celebrating our Past. . . Charting our Future” was the theme for the event that included a career day, a community service project, and many opportunities for students to hear guest speakers from the community.
Several congratulations are in order this evening. . .
Congratulations to five of our high schools – Cox, Kempsville, Landstown, Ocean Lakes, and Princess Anne for earning recognition from the Virginia High School League by receiving the Wachovia Sportmanship Cup for the 2002-03 athletic seasons. Only eleven high schools in Virginia were awarded this distinction.

Voloudakis ! The students competed in the 20th annual Student Culinary Arts and Education Salon sponsored by the Tidewater Branch of the International Food Service Executives Association bringing home first place honors with the trophy for the “Highest Point Accumulation by a Secondary School.
Thoroughgood Elementary School’s website has been chosen as an outstanding school website by the EduHound “Spotlight School of the Week” program. Thoroughgood’s site was featured in a January edition of EduHound Weekly. Congratulations!
Hats off to Rosemont Forest, Thalia, and Brookwood Elementary Schools for earning certification as Parent Involvement Schools of Excellence from the National PTA. Staff and parents at these schools have worked collaboratively to document and improve efforts to actively engage parents.
Congratulations to students from Princess Anne High who were recently featured in February 6th’s edition of The New York Times Magazine. Sixteen Princess Anne High students were spotlighted modeling current fashions in the article entitiled “The Sound”. In response to the magazine’s survey, students shared what they liked about our city and provided insight into their music and fashion preferences. Grammy-winnning music producers from Virginia Beach were the subjects of the article: Chad Hugo, a 1992 graduate of Kempsville High and Pharrell Williams, a 1993 graduate of Princess Anne High were named producers of the year at this year’s Grammys.
