The Summer Enrichment Camp offers an eight-day educational program for gifted and high ability students enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) and currently in grades 2 - 5. This year students will participate in one enrichment course only, allowing teachers and students a minimum of three hours of interactive learning. The student's day will begin and end with a 100 - 200 minute block of time devoted to the enrichment course. Campers will shift between a 30-minute lunch block and a 30-minute activity block in the middle of the day. Students may elect to play games of strategy or to attend a seminar presented by students attending academy and advanced academic programs. Drink and snack machines will not be available for any student purchases. Parents must provide their children with a bag lunch and drink every day.
In order to streamline the travel between home and camp, a school bus will be available to shuttle students to Camp from several locations in the school division. Buses will pickup students at the satellite locations only. The specific number and location of the bus sites will be determined after all student applications have been processed. Transportation to and from the home and the bus will be the responsibility of parents and guardians. Families will be notified of the specific bus locations and details of the enrichment course placements by June 3, 2008. Carpool information will be provided to those parents sharing contact information and giving the Office of Gifted Education permission to share the information with other families also interested in forming a carpool.| Applications: | Application forms |

COURSE CATEGORIES
All of the courses available during the Summer Enrichment Camp connect with one or more of the categories described below. The specific course description and title will be included in a second mailing to each family registering a child for the 2008 Summer Enrichment Camp. Students should rank each category in the order of their preference or interest on the application. This information will be used to make the best placement available.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Students explore a theme or a topic through the creation of products that best express or communicate information learned.
PEOPLE AND PLACES
Students look at the customs, traditions, food, clothing, shelter, and/or languages of people in a particular geographical area.
INQUIRY AND PROBLEM SOLVING
Students investigate patterns and rules as they manipulate principles of reasoning through a variety of challenging hands-on activities.
TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS
Parents and guardians are to consider the transportation resources available for the 2008 Summer Enrichment Camp and select the best option. Distance between a student's home and Camp is important, as is the distance between any childcare facility, home, and Camp. Students living a short distance from Camp may not have the option of riding a bus. Families living a considerable distance from Camp may choose to form carpools between the satellite bus site and home.
Satellite bus locations are determined by the location of each student's home, subdivision, or childcare facility communicated on the application form
. On the application form, parents and guardians are asked to share transportation preferences in order to assist with planning. Families will be notified of specific bus locations, receive a carpool list if applicable, and learn more detail about the enrichment course for their children in a packet to be mailed before June 3, 2008. Additionally, the Transportation Agreement will be in this packet and is to be completed and returned to the Office of Gifted Education by June 18, 2008. Every camper must have a signed Transportation Agreement on file.
HOW TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD
Write or print clearly as you complete all sections, front and back, of the application form
