Virginia Beach City Public Schools is providing an opportunity for students to attend a year-round school even if their home school is not one of the school division's four year-round elementary schools – Corporate Landing, Plaza, Point O'View, and Seatack.
If you believe your child could benefit from the flexibility of a year-round calendar, you may want to consider enrolling him or her in one of these four schools for the 2008-2009 school year. To begin the process for consideration, please complete a The Student Placement Request Form for Elementary School
and return it to the year-round school of your choice. Enrollment is open throughout the year.
The opportunity to attend a year-round school is extended first to students who attend the year-round schools' partner schools, known as opt-out schools. Opt-out schools enroll children who are zoned for a year-round schedule, but whose parents and guardians prefer the traditional schedule. On the other hand, opt-out schools also allow their students to transfer out of their program into a year-round program, if that is the schedule their families prefer. The opt-out schools, are: Ocean Lakes for Corporate Landing; Brookwood for Plaza; Arrowhead and Kempsville Meadows for Point O' View; and Birdneck for Seatack. In these cases, transportation for students is provided.
However, the Department of School Administration, conscious that there are families that would like the opportunity to avail themselves of the benefits of year-round education, have opened enrollment citywide to the four schools on a space-available basis. In these cases the family would have to provide transportation for their children. Those parents who would like to visit a year-round school or just hear a little more about the program are encouraged to call the principal(s) of the school(s) they wish to consider:
- Corporate Landing Elementary, David B. French, 757.648.2360
- Plaza Elementary, Dr. Mary F. Daniels, 757.648.3400
- Point O'View Elementary, Edward G. Timlin, 757.648.3440
- Seatack Elementary, Larry Ames, 757.437.4867
Year-round school provides the same number of days of instruction as a traditional school; it is just arranged over 12 months rather than the customary 10-month schedule. Students are taught the identical curricula but receive instruction in approximately 45-day blocks of learning, with vacations and intersessions of 5-15 days distributed throughout the year. During intersessions opportunities for remediation and enrichment are offered to children. Year-round school represents a change in when students learn, not in what and how they learn. Year-round school offers students increased opportunities for successful learning. Research studies show that students who attend classes under a year-round schedule learn better and retain knowledge longer.
The year-round student calendar for the 2008-2009 school year is available. Should you have any questions about the year-round school program, please contact the Department of School Administration at 757.263.1088.
