Why is College Park Elementary offering Supplemental Educational Services (SES) to students?

girlCollege Park Elementary is offering Supplemental Educational Services to eligible students in order to increase student achievement. Although College Park Elementary earned full accreditation by the Virginia Department of Education, the school did not show Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in reading during the 2010-2011 school year. As a result, College Park Elementary will offer additional academic services to eligible students during its second year of school improvement 2011-2012.

Under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), schools that receive Title I federal funding must ensure that students are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) by demonstrating proficiency on the Virginia Standards of Learning. College Park Elementary is designated as a Title I school. Title I-Part A of NCLB provides the funding for the SES program.

What are Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?

The term Supplemental Educational Services refers to free extra academic assistance, such as tutoring or remedial help, that is made available to eligible students in subjects such as reading, language arts, and math. This additional help can be provided before school, after school, or on Saturday.

How can I find out if my child is eligible for SES?

College Park Elementary students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch are eligible for SES. If funds are not available to serve all eligible students, priority is given to the lowest achieving eligible students based on a variety of data including SOL tests, Phonological Awareness Language (PALS) assessment, and Development Reading Assessment (DRA). Parents will be notified by school staff if their child is eligible to receive additional academic services.

When and where will the supplemental services be offered?

Boy

Eligible College Park Elementary students will have access to supplemental services beginning on October 17, 2011 and ending April 27, 2012. These free of charge services could be offered before or after school or on Saturdays at various locations to include: College Park Elementary, student’s home, libraries, churches, nearby colleges, or universities.

  • At College Park Elementary, tutoring will be offered Monday and Friday from 2:50 – 4:50 p.m.
  • Tutoring at the home of the student or any other location is arranged between the parent and the SES provider.

Will Virginia Beach City Public Schools/College Park Elementary provide transportation to and from the service providers?

Transportation will not be provided to and from the service providers. Parents are responsible for all transportation. This includes services offered at the school.

Who will be providing the supplemental services to students?

Parents will have the opportunity to select the supplemental service provider that best meets the needs of their child from a list of approved service providers that has been made available by the Virginia Department of Education. For your convenience, the school division has produced a Supplemental Educational Services Guide to provide parents the opportunity to review and select an approved available service provider for their child. In addition to the Supplemental Education Services Guide, a detailed overview pdf on each provider is available so parents have access to important information such as: program description, progress reports and evaluation tools, and evidence of effectiveness.

As a parent, how can I make sure I am selecting the best service provider for my child?

College Park Elementary staff will work with the parent of every eligible student to assist them, if needed, with the selection of a provider that best meets the academic needs of his or her child. Parents are encouraged to closely examine the qualifications of each service provider included in the Supplemental Education Services Guide. For the convenience of parents, detailed information pdf on each service provider is available.

Please call the school office at 757.648.2280 to request assistance with selecting a service provider for your child. Your child’s teacher, the school’s Parent Involvement Liaison, guidance counselor, and administrative staff are also available to assist you with choosing a service provider.

When can I select a service provider for my child?

Mom and boyParents may start selecting a service provider beginning on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. May I select more than one service provider for my child?

To ensure that each child is able to focus on the academic area he or she is in need of improvement, parents may select only one service provider.

After I select my child’s service provider, how will I be able to monitor their progress?

The parent of every child participating in the SES will work closely with school staff to ensure his or her chosen provider is meeting the academic needs of their child. In support of this, each child participating in the SES will have a Student Learning Plan that will include the following:

  • Specific achievement goals for the student, developed with the student’s parent.
  • How the student’s progress will be measured.
  • How the student’s parents and teachers will be regularly informed of that progress.
  • A timetable for improving the student’s achievement.

If I have a question about the SES who should I contact?

Should you have questions about the SES program, you may call Melissa Klopfer Title I coordinator at 757.648.2293 or email vbcpsses@vbschools.com.

How will I be updated, throughout the school year, on the SES program?

BoyParental involvement is important for any child to succeed in school. In support of this, College Park Elementary staff will continue to work closely with the parent of every student to ensure they are able to make informed decisions about the SES program. Throughout the school year, school staff will use a variety of communication resources to keep parents informed. These communications resources include: AlertNow, emails, face-to-face meetings, letters/fliers, and personal telephone calls. The College Park Elementary website also has a link – Supplemental Education Services – on its homepage that will take you to a page with updated information on this program.
