Charter Schools

Legislation passed in the 1998 Virginia General Assembly created the provision for charter schools throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently, there are no charter schools operating within Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Charter schools create an alternative form of public schooling and lift restraints from public schools so they can pursue innovative teaching methods aimed at improving student performance. In Virginia Beach, charter schools are authorized by the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach. Pursuant to legislation approved by the 2010 Virginia General Assembly, prior to submitting an application to a local school board, charter school applicants are required to submit their applications to the Virginia Board of Education for a determination as to whether the application meets the Board's approval.

Detailed information on the charter school application process and the location of charter schools operating in Virginia are available on the Virginia Department of Education's website. If you are interested in pursuing a charter school application with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, School Board Policy 3-95 serves as guide for the process.
