Sandra Smith-Jones was elected to the School Board in 2000 as an at-large member. She was re-elected in 2004 to represent the Kempsville Borough and subsequently served as vice chair from July 2004-June 2006. She has 15 years of teaching experience in public education. Ms. Smith-Jones is presently an assistant professor at Hampton University and serves as the school’s Director of Graduate Education Programs at their Virginia Beach campus and was recently elected to the university’s Judiciary Board. Prior to joining Hampton University as a full-time assistant professor, she served as an adjunct professor for the university and held an administrative position with Accomack County Public Schools in Onley, Virginia.

Ms. Smith-Jones is currently serving as the executive director of the National African American School Board Members Council and was recognized by the organization for her outstanding leadership in October 2006. She has received numerous awards for work with at-risk youth and was selected three times as her school’s Teacher of the Year while employed with Portsmouth Public Schools, Virginia. Ms. Smith-Jones has been recognized for her community service by the National Hampton University Alumni Association as an Exemplary Alumna and received the YWCA Woman of the Year Award for Volunteerism. She is a member of the International Who’s Who of Professional Educators, former president of the Virginia Beach NAACP, and was appointed to the Virginia Advisory Board on Teacher Education and Licensure (ABTEL) for a three-year term. Ms. Smith-Jones holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from Regent University and a bachelor’s degree in English from Hampton University. Her three children are graduates of Virginia Beach City Public Schools and her granddaughter is currently enrolled as a student in the school division.
