6. Student, Employee and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. Outstanding STEM Award Recipient

The School Board is proud to recognize one of Virginia’s 2017 Outstanding STEM honorees: Gabby Taylor, freshman at Landstown High School!

Gabby is in a very elite group. This award, which is presented by Governor Terry McAuliffe and the Science Museum of Virginia, was established more than 30 years ago to recognize the Commonwealth’s brightest scientific minds. Last year, two new categories were introduced—one specifically to recognize a student who excels in STEM, an acronym which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Gabby’s work in beekeeping caught the attention of scientists and researchers who review potential candidates for this award. Since age 11, she has worked with mentors to educate the public about the crucial role that bees play in our ecosystem. By sixth grade, Gabby had purchased her own custom beehive. She now tends to more than 35,000 bees in her own backyard, won two statewide essay contests on the topic and was featured in an HBO documentary series about the environment.

Please join me in congratulating Gabby Taylor on this outstanding achievement!

6B. Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
Next, the School Board is proud to recognize the school division’s Department of Budget and Finance for receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

Accepting the award on behalf of the department is Chief Financial Officer Farrel Hanzaker.

This award is of particular importance because it is the highest form of recognition granted to an entity by the Government Finance Officers Association, or G-F-O-A. The school division is receiving the award for the 2016-2017 budget document.

In order to receive the award, an organization’s budget document is judged by independent reviewers against 27 criteria established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and that reflect the G-F-O-A’s best practices. Only individual governments that succeed in achieving excellence receive this award.

At this time, we ask that members of the Budget and Finance Department please stand to be recognized for their excellent work.

Congratulations on this notable distinction.
