School Board Recognitions
February 7, 2017

6. Student, Employee and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. National Board Certified Teachers

The School Board is proud to recognize the division’s newest National Board Certified Teachers. Let’s meet them:

  • Esther Coulter from Landstown High School;
  • Maria Flores Apape, Salem High School;
  • Gwen Mawhinney, Salem Elementary School; and
  • Maria Solock, Kempsville High School.

Unfortunately, Natalia Goodloe from Kempsville High School is unable to join us this evening.

Offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, National Board Certification is a voluntary certification that takes anywhere from three to five years to complete and is based on rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. As a symbol of professional teaching excellence, receiving this advanced certification attests that an instructional staff member has been judged by his or her peers to be an accomplished educator.

Candidates describe the process as a way to deepen subject-matter knowledge, reflect on their work as teachers and become more skillful in daily classroom instruction. As one of this evening’s honorees describes it:

  • “Going through national board certification was a very humbling experience. It is a self-analysis of my commitment as an educator and, more importantly, going through the process made me become a better learner so I can become a better teacher.”

Please join me in congratulating these outstanding teachers for their hard work and dedication to their profession!
