School Board Recognitions
November 4, 2015

6. Student, Employee and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation

The School Board is pleased to recognize the Department of Budget and Finance for earning the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. Here to accept the plaque on behalf of the department is Chief Financial Officer Farrell Hanzaker. Members of the Department of Budget and Finance are in the audience tonight. I’d like to ask them to stand while we acknowledge their accomplishment.

Mr. Hanzaker and his staff do an outstanding job assisting the Board in developing our annual budgets, maintaining a system of checks and balances, and looking for opportunities to improve efficiencies and reduce spending.

The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting. Documents submitted to the Budget Awards Program are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and by outside reviewers with experience in public-sector budgeting.

Please join me in congratulating the Department of Budget and Finance!

6B. Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) Statewide Art Contest First Place Winner
The School Board is pleased to recognize Carly Dilday as the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) First Place Art Contest winner.

Carly, a senior at Salem High School and the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, took first place honors in the VAST 2015 statewide Art Contest. Her work will appear in the 2016 spring issue of the Science Educator. It was prominently displayed during VAST’s Annual Professional Development Institute (PDI) in Chantilly, Virginia and appears on the VAST website. Her mixed media artwork, which will help the public better understand the PDI’s theme of “Designing Inquiring Minds” was created in Jared Boone’s AP Studio Art class and was included in her AP digital portfolio, which received a perfect score.

Please join me in congratulating this outstanding student artist!

Mr. Chairman that concludes our student and employee recognitions for this evening.
