6. Student, Employee and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. FBLA State Leadership Conference

We have several students being honored this evening. We kindly ask that parents remain seated until all of the awards and recognitions are complete. Thank you.

The School Board is pleased to recognize the following students for earning first place honors at the FBLA Virginia Leadership Conference:

From Landstown High School:

  • Jamar Smith; and
  • Chris Emodi – first place in the Marketing category

From Ocean Lakes High School:

  • Cameron Harrison – top honors in the Spreadsheet Applications competition; and

From Princess Anne High School:

  • Tommy Sugg – who earned first place in the Securities and Investments.

In each and every category, these students demonstrated high-tech abilities and skills which will one day make them highly sought after in the workplace.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is an educational association of student members preparing for careers in business and business-related fields. The FBLA provides innovative leadership development programs to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship.

6A. Virginia Music Educators Association All Virginia Honors Music Ensembles
These next awards and recognitions are sure to be music to your ears as we honor members of the All Virginia Band, Orchestra, Chorus and Senior Honors Choir.

These students were selected from among their peers throughout the Commonwealth for inclusion in these prestigious musical groups. These are the highest awards possible for state recognition in music and the students who were selected have distinguished themselves as the top performers in their strand.

Two students from the Visual and Performing Arts Academy were selected as members of both the All-State Chorus and the Senior Honors Choir. Please welcome: Alexandra Fleshman and Garrett Walker.

Sarrah Bioc and Lainie Clary from the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School.

6C. State Honor Band and Blue Ribbon Schools
Tonight, we also honor eight of our school music departments for receiving an Honor Band Award or a Blue Ribbon Distinction for the 2014-15 school year.

Cox, Princess Anne and Tallwood high schools earned the distinction of Virginia Honor Band from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association. These bands received a superior rating at both the State Marching Band Assessment in the fall and the Concert Band Assessment in the spring. Selection as a Virginia Honor Band is the highest honor awarded to a high school band in the Commonwealth.

Here to accept the plaques on behalf of their respective schools are.
From Cox High School: Band Director Mike Lane
From Princess Anne High School: Band Director John Boyd; and
From Tallwood High School: Band Director Tim Rossettini.

Princess Anne High School and Tallwood High School are also among the schools being recognized tonight as Blue Ribbon Schools. In order to qualify, the band, orchestra and chorus at each school must receive three superior ratings at their respective district assessments and participate in Sight-Reading Assessments.

Here to accept the plaques on behalf of the schools, Princess Anne band director John Boyd is joined by orchestra director Mary Hughes and choral director David Prescott.

From Tallwood High School, band director Tim Rossettini is joined by orchestra director Adrienne Pucky, and choral director Corbin Shoup. Additional Blue Ribbon Schools include:

  • Corporate Landing Middle School, represented by band director James Reid, orchestra director Lee Ann Stevahn and choral director Mary Letson.
  • Great Neck Middle School represented by band director Heather Smith, orchestra director Robin Sawyer and choral director Lou Ann Meade.
  • Kemps Landing/Old Donation School represented tonight by band director Kenneth Poe and choral director DeLena Poe.
  • Plaza Middle School represented by orchestra director Sarah McGhee and choral director Jennifer Harrison.
  • Salem Middle School represented by band director Jo Marie Larkin and orchestra director Laura Parker.
