School Board Recognitions

6A. VHSL 2015 State Swimming Champions – Division 5A
The School Board is pleased to recognize the VHSL Swim and Dive champions from Princess Anne High School. Making a splash for the Cavaliers this evening is Junior Daniel Arris.

Daniel is the 2015 VHSL state champion in the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke. He defeated his PA teammate to take home the top honor with a winning time of 57-point-31 seconds.

In addition to his win in the Breaststroke, Daniel took third place in the 200 Yard Individual Medley and was also a member of the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay team which placed third in the state.

Daniel’s teammate, Senior Jordan Bovee is unable to join us this evening. But, we should note that he is the 2015 VHSL state champion in the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle.

Please join me in congratulating Daniel on his state championship. We look forward to celebrating future successes with the outstanding student athletes from Princess Anne High School.

6B. Virginia 2015 Reading Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize Kemps Landing/Old Donation School’s Eric Bone for being selected as the 2015 Olfie T. Rubin Reading Teacher of the Year by the Virginia State Reading Association.

Mr. Bone currently serves as the school improvement specialist where he works with literacy and curriculum teams for grades 2-8. A 19-year veteran educator, he taught Advanced English 7 before transitioning to his current position in March.

Mr. Bone was selected as the 2015 Reading Teacher of the Year based on his exemplary commitment to literacy education. He is especially interested in the integration of visual media and technology with literacy instruction.

Please join me in congratulating this outstanding teacher and champion of literacy and reading!

6C. VAHPERD 2014-2015 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize Centerville Elementary School teacher Tom Warren for being selected the 2014-2015 Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

This 15-year veteran teacher was selected by his peers from a statewide pool. Mr. Warren is known for developing engaging physical education lessons and for creating activities to involve parents and families such as a Winter Olympic competition and a Jump Rope for Heart event.

In addition, he has mentored student teachers along with new and veteran teachers and has given numerous professional development presentations.

Please join me in thanking Mr. Warren for his valuable contributions to our schools and in congratulating him for his teacher of the year honors!

6D. Virginia State Champion – Poetry Out Loud Contest
The School Board is pleased to recognize Ahkei Togun, Tallwood High School Junior, for being selected as the Virginia State Champion of thePoetry Out Loud Contest.

Ahkei won the state title with his reading of the poem, The Way it Sometimes Is, by Henry Taylor. The Poetry Out Loud competition is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation along with individual state are agencies. It encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation.

In addition, the program helps students develop public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

As Virginia’s winner, Ahkei will represent us in the National Poetry Out Loud competition in Washington, D.C. next week. We wish him the best of luck!
