School Board Recognitions
March 31, 2015

6A. VHSL 2015 State Wrestling Champions
The School Board is pleased to recognize two of the division’s outstanding wrestlers who earned 2015 VHSL State Wrestling Championship titles.

From Salem High School, please welcome Tyrone Gayle. Tyrone took top honors at 182 pounds in Classification 5-A.

He was the 7-2 winner over a wrestler from Brooke Point High School in Stafford County. Tyrone wrestled at both the 182-pound and 195-pound weight classes throughout the season and was very successful at both. He is a sophomore at Salem High School. So, we are sure this is just one of many victories – and hopefully state championships – that we will be celebrating with Tyrone.

Please join me in congratulating this outstanding student athlete from Salem High School.

Now on to Classification 6-A where First Colonial High School’s Nevin O’Brien took home the 2015 VHSL state championship title in the 170 pound weight class.

The O’Brien family name is very familiar to local wrestling fans. Nevin is one of three brothers who are standouts in the sport. This is Nevin’s first state championship title. He defeated an opponent from Madison High School by a score of 6-5. Last year, he placed third in the state at a lower weight class. A senior of First Colonial, Nevin plans to wrestle in college as well. We certainly wish him the best of luck.

Please join me in congratulating this remarkable student athlete.

6B. VHSL 2015 State Group 5A Girls Basketball Champions
The School Board is pleased to recognize the 2015 VHSL State Girls’ Basketball Team Champions (Classification 5A) from Princess Anne High School.

  • Danyael Goodhope
  • Team Manager Nia Hamiel
  • Gadiva Hubbard
  • Brianna Johnson
  • Aliah Kennedy
  • Team Manager Ashley Mickens

The team is coached by Darnell Dozier, who will accept the team plaque. Assistant coaches William Alston and Marc Velbis are also here tonight.

This is the sixth state basketball championship for the Lady Cavaliers since 2002. They defeated L.C Bird High School from Henrico earlier this month to capture the 2015 State Championship.

The win caps an outstanding 27 and 3 season, during which the team also won the Beach District and the 5A South Region titles.

The young ladies here tonight are not only outstanding student athletes, they are ambassadors for their school and role models for other young women.

Please join me in congratulating the Cavaliers championship basketball team.

6C. VIAAA Athletic Administrator of the Year
And finally tonight, the School Board welcomes Tim Wolf, staff member at Kempsville High School, for being named the 2015 Athletic Administrator of the Year, by the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Wolf is a Certified Master Athletic Administrator. He was instrumental in drafting the Region 5A South Handbook which governs regional athletics and also the Atlantic Conference 9 handbook.

In addition, he works closely with students, coaches, club sponsors and administrators to ensure that the highest levels of sportsmanship and good will are upheld at all times. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Kempsville chiefs were awarded the Claudia Dodson Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award two years in a row along with the VHSL Staying in the Game Award last year.

Mr. Wolf is a strong supporter of all student activities and mentor to the young people in his building. Please join me in congratulating him on a job well done!

That concludes the scheduled recognitions for this evening, Mr. Chairman.
