School Board Recognitions
March 3, 2015

6. VSBA Green Schools Award
The School Board is pleased to recognize the Office of Facilities Planning and Construction for leading the school division’s sustainability efforts. The work they do played an important role in the division being named a Green Schools Challenge winner and earning a Platinum Certification from the Virginia School Board Association.

Accepting the plaque on behalf of the office is the division’s chief sustainability officer Tim Cole.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Virginia Beach City Public Schools has earned a Platinum Certification from the VSBA. That is the highest honor possible in the Green Schools Challenge.

School divisions earned points for implementing action items such as developing a divisionwide recycling collection program, adopting an anti-idling policy for school fleet vehicles and creating a divisionwide recognition program for teachers and staff who promote environmental concerns in their classrooms. The competition included 30 possible action items in 12 categories. To earn a platinum certification, VBCPS had to earn a minimum of 175 points out of a possible 200.

In addition, VBCPS was recognized as being a “Certified Green School Division” for implementing new actions and adopting policies that earn the division “green points.” VBCPS took first place honors in the category for divisions with a student population of more than 10,001.

Please join me in congratulating the Office of Facilities Planning and Construction for leading the division’s “green team” and for its commitment to developing and supporting sustainable practices.

That concludes the scheduled recognitions for this evening, Mr. Chairman.
