8E. Recognize Service of members departing the School Board Dec. 31, 2012

The School Board would like to take a few moments to recognize several members of the Board who will complete their terms of service on December 31st.

First, I'd like to ask Brent McKenzie to step forward.

Mr. McKenzie has been a dedicated member of this Board, representing the Rose Hall district, since January 2009. During that time, he served on the School Board's legislative committee as well as the student discipline committee.

As a teacher himself, Mr. McKenzie has always been an advocate for not only the children of our city but the men and women who teach them.

Mr. McKenzie, on behalf of Dr. Merrill, Mr. Edwards, and the entire School Board, I thank you for your commitment to education. Please accept this Education Foundation print as a token of our appreciation for your many years of work as a member of the School Board. We wish you well.

At this time, I would like to ask Patrick Salyer to come forward.

Mr. Salyer has served as a member of the School Board since January 2009. He was elected to and served as an At-Large member until December 2011 at which time he was appointed by the Board to represent the Kempsville district.

Throughout the years, Mr. Salyer could be seen at any number of school and community events ranging from elementary school programs to high school graduations. He served on division's Equity Council and the Boar's student discipline committee. In addition, he was the School Board representative on the City's Kempsville/Witchduck/Princess Anne Intersection Project.

Mr. Salyer, we are pleased to present you with this Education Foundation print as a memento of your selfless dedication to the children of this City and our School Board.

We wish you the best of luck in the future.

Mrs. Ashley McLeod, will you please join the chairman and Dr. Merrill in front of the dais?

Mrs. McLeod was first appointed by the School Board and then subsequently elected and has served as an At-Large member since March 2010.

She served as co-chair of the division's Long-Range School Facility Master Plan Steering Committee and as a member of the Building Utilization and student discipline committees. In addition, she worked as a member of the School Board legislative committee and the N-S-B-A Federal Relations Network.

Mrs. McLeod is always among the first to ask "what is best for the children of Virginia Beach?" And for that, we are grateful. Please accept this print, entitled "Your Future, Your Choice" as a token of our appreciation.

Finally, I'd like to ask Mr. Scott Seery to please step forward.

The School Board has twice appointed Mr. Seery for service as an At-Large member. He first joined the Board from January 2010 through December 2010 and returned from January 2012 through the end of this year.

Both times, Mr. Seery willingly accepted the challenge of service and dedicated himself to the children and families of Virginia Beach.

During his time on the Board, Mr. Seery served as a member of the student discipline committee and the building utilization committee.

Mr. Seery, we are grateful that you have twice stepped forward to serve as an appointed member of this Board and we thank you for your commitment.

We'd like to present you with this Education Foundation print in appreciation of your work with the Board.

Later this evening, a resolution honoring each of these outstanding members of the School Board will be approved as part of the consent agenda. It reads:

Whereas, the direction of public education is of paramount importance to the quality of life in the City of Virginia Beach and the children and young adults are the City's most vital resource; and
