4. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions
4A. Governor’s Career and Technical Education Exemplary Standards Award
The School Board is pleased to recognize the Technical and Career Education Center as the recipient of the Virginia Governor’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Exemplary Standards Award. Accepting the award on behalf of the school are Director David Swanger and Trade and Industrial Teacher Wayne Champigny.

This prestigious new award honors Technical and Career Education (TCE) programs in the Commonwealth that meet “rigorous standards” for exemplary CTE programs in Virginia. According to Governor Kaine, the Automotive Technology Program at the Technical and Career Education Center is a model for integrating 21st skills within a technical learning environment. Students have the advantage of learning automotive technology competencies not only in the classroom but also through internship programs. At the same time, students have the opportunity to earn technical credentials that give them an advantage in whatever postgraduate path they choose, going directly into the work world or pursuing higher education at a college or technical school. The Tech Center’s Automotive Technology Program is one of 12 programs across the state to be nominated for this award and was required to undergo a rigorous documentation, interview, and site visit process for selection.

Please join me in congratulating the Technical and Career Education Center for this outstanding accomplishment.

4B. National Network of Partnership Schools District Award
For the third year in a row, Virginia Beach City Public Schools has earned the prestigious Partnership District Award from the National Network of Partnership Schools at Johns Hopkins University. Accepting the award on behalf of Virginia Beach City Public Schools are Karen Clevinger, former Title 1 Instructional Specialist and current Parkway Elementary School teacher, and Melissa McQuarrie, Director of Community Relations.

The award reflects the division’s strong commitment to developing meaningful partnerships which link schools, families, and the larger community in order to support student achievement.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools was selected for the Partnership District Award based on the quality of the division’s teamwork, action plans, activities, and demonstrated progress over time. In addition, seven outstanding VBCPS parent involvement practices were selected for publication in the NNPS Promising Partnership Practices compilation which represents “best practices” in engaging parents.

Please join me in congratulating this outstanding program.
