4. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions

4A. District of Excellence Distinction in School Nutrition
The School Board is pleased to recognize staff from the Office of Food Services as recipients of the School Nutrition Association’s District of Excellence in School Nutrition distinction. Accepting the award on behalf of the office is James Ratliff, Director, Office of Food Services, and Edwina Forrest, Area Supervisor.

This prestigious award recognizes school districts who meet the national best practice standards that support the School Nutrition Association’s Keys of Excellence in the area of nutrition and nutrition education, communication and marketing, administration, and operations.  Serving 48,000 meals a day – 13,000 breakfasts and 35,000 lunches – Virginia Beach City Public Schools is one of only four school divisions in Virginia designated as a District of Excellence in School Nutrition.

4B. SkillsUSA National Competition Winner
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the 2009 national SkillsUSA second place winner in Technical Computer Applications.

Daniel A., a Computer Network Administration II student and recent graduate of the Advanced Technology Center and Landstown High School, placed second in Technical Computer Applications at the national SkillsUSA competition. Daniel competed against nearly 30 state SkillsUSA high school representatives from across the nation.

4C. Outstanding Attendance – June 2009
The School Board is pleased to recognize the schools with the highest rates of student attendance for the month of June 2009. Representatives from these schools are invited to come forward as their school’s name is announced.

Old Donation Center, with an attendance rate of 97.49% is the recipient of the elementary school attendance certificate for June, as well as the most improved attendance certificate for June. Accepting Old Donation’s attendance certificate is Principal Gloria Harris.  Congratulations to students and staff at Old Donation Center.

Kemps Landing Magnet School, with an attendance rate of 98.41%, receives the middle school attendance certificate, as well as the most improved attendance certificate for June and the most improved middle school attendance for the 2008-2009 school year. Accepting all three certificates for Kemps Landing is Dr. William Brown, School Improvement Specialist. Congratulations to the students and staff at Kemps Landing Magnet School for their outstanding student attendance.

At the high school level, the attendance certificate for June 2009 goes to Green Run High School which reported a 96.91% student attendance rate. Accepting the school’s certificate is Assistant Principal Heidi L. Trumble. Congratulations to Green Run High students and staff.

4D. Most Improved Attendance – June 2009
The School Board will now recognize the high school which has had the most improved attendance for the month of June 2009.

The most improved attendance certificate at the high school level goes to Open Campus which posted a 4.60 percent increase in student attendance for June 2009.  Representing Open Campus is Renaissance Academy Director Dr. Byron Williams and Academic Dean Nicole Morgenthau. Congratulations, and we would like to ask that you remain standing for the next recognition as well.

4E. Most Improved Attendance – 2008-2009 School Year
Now for the most improved overall attendance at the high school level for the entire 2008-2009 school year.
 
The School Board would like to congratulate the students and staff of Virginia Beach Central Academy, which improved attendance by 5.01 percent over the previous year.

Accepting the attendance certificate is Renaissance Academy Director Dr. Byron Williams and Academic Dean Nicole Morgenthau. Congratulations to students and staff for their improved student attendance during the
2008-2009 school year.
