5. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions
5A. 2008 VHSL State Championship – Lincoln Douglas Debate
The School Board is now pleased to recognize Mark H., First Colonial High School, as the 2008 VHSL State Champion in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate. This is the second year Mark has received this honor. Mark is a rising senior in the Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School.
Lincoln-Douglas Debate, also known as a values debate, traditionally places a heavy emphasis on logic, ethical values, and philosophy. En route to the state championship, which was held on the campus of Liberty University, Mark earned the Beach District and Eastern Region Championships.

5B. 2008 VHSL State Championship Girls' Outdoor Track Team
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the 2008 VHSL State Championship Girls' Outdoor Track Team. Team Members include:

The team is coached by Thomas Anderson, Dave Coulter, and Minnie Reliford.
The Landstown High School Girls Track Team followed up their indoor state championship by winning the VHSL State Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The team tied a AAA state meet record by scoring 94 points. Individual titles went to Marlena W in the 100 and 200 meter run and Cierra M in the 400 meter run. The team also swept all three relay races, which had never been done in the history of the Virginia State Track Championships. The 4x100 meter relay was run by Olivia H., Leah B., Cierra M., and Marlena W. The 4x400 meter relay was run by Kelnesha H., Taylor W., Diane W., and Cierra M. The 4x800 meter relay was run by Kelnesha H, Stephanie F., Samira J.,
and Amira C.
