6. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions

6A. 2008 National Psychology Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize Ms. Marjorie Cole, Psychology Teacher, Kellam High School, for receiving the Moffett Memorial Teacher of Excellence Award from the American Psychological Association.

The APA selects one four-year college/university professor, one two-year community college professor, and one high school teacher in the nation as recipients of this honor. Ms. Cole is a veteran teacher of 33 years, with 23 of those dedicated to VBCPS. She was the recipient of the 2003 Henry C. Lee Award from the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science & Medicine, given for the Best High School Criminal Science Class in Virginia. Ms. Cole earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science with a minor in Education from Baylor University and a Master's Degree in History from Duke University. In addition, Ms. Cole has done post-graduate work at the University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, and Texas A&M. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Cole on this outstanding accomplishment.

6B. 2008 VHSL AAA Lincoln Douglas Debate State Champion
We will recognize Mark H., VHSL State Debate Champion, at an upcoming meeting. Mark was unable to attend this evening.

6C. 2008 National American Sign Language Honor Society Competition Champion
The School Board is now pleased to recognize Elizabeth G., rising senior at Ocean Lakes High School, for placing first in the 2008 American Sign Language Literature Competition sponsored by the American Sign Language Honor Society.

The American Sign Language Honor Society program was established by the American Sign Language Teacher's Association to encourage and recognize high academic achievement in American Sign Language studies. The Honor Society annually sponsors a national sign language Literature competition in an effort to help students apply classroom learning to the larger society.

6D. 2008 Virginia SkillsUSA Champions
The School Board is also pleased to recognize students from the Advanced Technology Center for placing first in the 2008 Virginia SkillsUSA Competition. This competition was held on April 28, 2008 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

The following students received first place honors in their respective categories:

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled work force. It is a national organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. These students represented the ATC at the national competition in Kansas City in June. At that competition, Brian M received second place in the Internetworking category.

Congratulations SkillsUSA students.

6E. 2008 WordMaster Competition Individual and Team National Champions
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the top scorers in the 2008 National WordMasters Challenge.

The WordMasters Challenge is a national exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of new words and then to use those words in analogies that express various kinds of logical relationships.

The Providence Elementary 3rd Grade WordMasters Team placed second in the nation out of 203 teams in the Gold Division. Providence Team members include:

Troy H. Isabel P, who also placed 1st individually,
Ginger J. Logan V.; and
Chase J. Kyle W.
Laura K.  

The team is coached by classroom teachers John Conway and Tammy Alfonsi. Please join me in congratulating Providence Elementary's 3rd grade team.

The Providence Elementary 4th Grade WordMasters Team placed first among 275 teams in the Gold Division. Team members that also placed first individually include:

Tom R. Austyn M.

The team was coached by classroom teachers Michael Korbak and Erin Broome. Please join me in congratulating the Providence Elementary's 4th grade team.

The Providence Elementary 5th Grade WordMasters Team placed first among 289 teams in the Gold Division. These team members are:

Emily B. Abigail M., who placed 2nd individually
Dana C. Sydney P.
Brianna G., who placed 1st individually, Chad R., who placed 1st individually,
Mackenzie G., who placed 2nd individually, Charlotte S., who placed 2nd individually
Georgia H., who placed 1st individually, Hughston S. who placed 2nd individually; and
Summer M. Estelle T., who placed 2nd individually

The team was assisted by classroom teachers Michele Clements and Linda Stout.

Melissa Knight, gifted resource teacher at Providence Elementary, who assisted all the Providence teams, will accept the school plaque. Congratulations to all Providence Elementary's WordMaster teams.

The Old Donation Center 5th Grade WordMasters Team placed second in the nation in the gold Division. Competing in this competition were 289 teams. Old Donation Center's fifth grade team members are:

Carter B. Abigail S.
Kyara G. Alexander W.

Students were coached by Doreen Sheler, who will accept the plaque on behalf of the school.
