6.     Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions

6.A.     Outstanding Attendance – June 2007
The School Board is pleased to recognize the schools with the highest rates of student attendance for the month of June 2007. Representatives from these schools are invited to come forward as their schools name is announced.

Old Donation Center, with an attendance rate of 97.87% is the recipient of the elementary school attendance certificate for June. Accepting Old Donation Centers attendance certificate is Principal Gloria Harris. Congratulations to students and staff at Old Donation Center!

Kemps Landing Magnet School, with an attendance rate of 98.79%, receives the attendance certificate, as well as most improved attendance certificate, for middle schools for June. Accepting both certificates for Kemps Landing Magnet is Principal Randi Riesbeck. Congratulations to the students and staff at Kemps Landing Magnet School for their outstanding student attendance in June!

At the high school level, the attendance certificate for June 2007 goes to First Colonial High School which reported a 97.49% student attendance rate. Accepting the schools certificate is Principal Dale Holt. Congratulations to First Colonial High students and staff!

6.B.     Most Improved Attendance – June 2007
The School Board will now recognize the elementary and high school which has the most improved attendance for the month of June 2007.

A review of attendance data shows that Creeds Elementary School had the most improved attendance for June with an improvement rate of 1.12%. Accepting Creeds attendance certificate is Principal Robin Davenport. Congratulations to students and staff at Creeds Elementary School!

The most improved attendance certificate at the high school level goes to Open Campus which posted a 4.44 percent increase in student attendance for June 2007. Representing Open Campus is Interim Assistant Principal Thomas Forest. Congratulations to the students and staff at Open Campus!

6C.      Most Improved Attendance – 2006-2007 School Year
Now for the most improved overall attendance for the entire 2006-2007 school year.
The School Board would like to congratulate the students and staff of Kempsville High school, which improved attendance by 1.03 percent over the previous year.

Accepting the attendance certificate on behalf of Kempsville High School is Assistant Principal Carey Manugo. Congratulations to the Chiefs for their improved student attendance during the 2006-2007 school year!

6D.      2008 Virginia Beach City Public Schools Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize the 2008 Virginia Beach City Public Schools Teacher of the Year, Erika C. Hitchcock, a grade 3 – 8 visual arts teacher at the Old Donation Center.

Ms. Hitchcock has been a teacher for five years, with all of these years dedicated to Virginia Beach City Public Schools and ODC. Prior to becoming a teacher, she was a graphic designer in the business world.

In her five years with the school division, Ms. Hitchcock has served in many leadership roles, including chair of several initiatives for visual arts including ODC testing, technology, proposal development, and newsletters for the visual arts program. Her professional associations are also numerous, among them the National, Virginia, and Tidewater Art Education Associations, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Ms. Hitchcock holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education from Old Dominion University and gifted endorsement from the University of Virginia. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts Education program at Virginia Commonwealth University.

6E.       2007 Virginia Department of Education School Stars
The School Board is pleased to recognize English teacher Amanda Ash from Open Campus, Science teacher Darcy Parker from the Center for Effective Learning, and Social Studies teacher Carlos Seward from Virginia Beach Central Academy for being named 2007 School Stars" by the Virginia Department of Education.

Each of these outstanding teachers was nominated by their principal for exceptional teaching in an alternative education setting. The Virginia Department of Educations Office of School Improvement reviewed lesson plans submitted by all nominees before selecting six School Stars" from across the commonwealth.
In addition, Darcy Parker and Amanda Ash were selected to present their lesson plans, developed to be suitable for an alternative education setting, at statewide event in May.

6F.        2007 National Social Studies League Top Scorers
The School Board is pleased to recognize the Virginia Beach City Public Schools top scorers in the 2007 National Social Studies League Examination.

The National Social Studies League, a division of the Continental Mathematics League, was established to promote student improvement in the areas of American Studies, Geography of the United States, and United States government.

Students from Kemps Landing Magnet School participated in the National Social Studies League Examination back in April. The top ten scores at each grade level were then added together and submitted as the schools team scores. Were happy to report that those team scores were the best in the nation at the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade levels.

6G.       2007 VHSL State Forensics Champions
The School Board will now recognize the 2007 VHSL State Forensics Champions.

The state forensics championships were held at Harrisonburg High School, on March 31.

Princess Anne High Schools forensics team captured its fifth state title, after taking home titles at the beach district and eastern region competitions. Members of this team are:

6H.       2007 Virginia Honor Bands
The next several awards will be music to your ears!
The School Board is pleased to recognize the 2007 State Honor Bands from Kellam, Kempsville, Princess Anne and Ocean Lakes high schools. Selection as an Honor Band is the highest award a band can receive. Each of these high school bands earned a Superior Rating at both the State Marching Band Festival in the Fall and the District Concert Band Festival in the Spring. Representing these outstanding Band programs are:

Bryan Wills, Band Director – Kempsville High School
John Boyd, Band Director – Princess Anne High School, and
Leah Greber, Band Director – Ocean Lakes High School

6I.         2007 Virginia Music Educators Association Blue Ribbon Schools
The School Board would like to congratulate the 2007 Blue Ribbon Schools, as designated by the Virginia Music Educators Association.
A schools music program is awarded this distinction after earning superior ratings for each ensemble at their respective district festivals.
Earning the 2007 Blue Ribbon School distinction are:
Princess Anne High Schools music department comprised of John Boyd, Band Director, Mary Hughes, Orchestra Director, and Donald Nultemeier, Choral Director.
Kempsville High Schools music department comprised of Bryan Wills, Band Director, Natalia Kuznetsova, Orchestra Director, and David Prescott, Jr. Choral Director.

The School Board is also pleased recognize the 2007 All-Virginia Concert Band.

Students selected for participation in the All-Virginia Concert Band must first have distinguished themselves at a District audition before advancing to the state auditions.
The following VBCPS students were selected for the 2007 All-Virginia Concert Band:

6L.        2007 All-Virginia Symphonic Band
The School Board will now recognize the 2007 All-Virginia Symphonic Band.
Again, Students selected for participation in the All-Virginia Symphonic Band must first audition at the District level before auditioning for a position in one of the All-Virginia ensembles.
The following students have distinguished themselves as the top performers in their performance strand.
Saxophone player Jonathan G., a recent graduate from First Colonial High School, performed under the direction of Andrew Hummer.
And from Landstown High School, rising senior Andrew K., who plays the trombone. Andrew is directed by Elwood Gehlert.

6M.      2007 All-Virginia Orchestra
The School Board would like to congratulate one VBCPS student who was selected for the 2007 All-Virginia Orchestra.
Princess Anne High School sophomore Robert F., who plays the viola, distinguished himself as a top performer at both the district and state level auditions. Robert is directed by Mary Hughes
