6. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognition

6A. National High School Football All-Star Game Participant
The School Board is pleased to recognize Erik M. for participating in the National High School Football All-Star Game.

Erik "EJ" M., Senior at Bayside High School and a High School All-American, was selected for and participated in the National High School Football All-Star Game on Saturday, January 8, 2008 in Orlando, Florida. EJ was the starting quarterback at Bayside High School for all 4 years of his high school career leading the team to the playoffs this past season. EJ is an honor student and member of the Heath Sciences Academy and will attend Florida State University in the fall where he will major in Biomedical Engineering. Please join me in congratulating EJ on his outstanding accomplishment!

6B. Governor's Award for Educational Excellence
The School Board will now recognize five VBCPS schools as recipients of the prestigious Governor's Award for Educational Excellence.

Five schools - Creeds Elementary School, Kemps Landing Magnet School, King's Grant Elementary School, Old Donation Center, and Princess Anne High School – are recipients of the prestigious Governor's Award for Educational Excellence, given by Governor Timothy Kaine and the Virginia Board of Education. This is the highest honor awarded under a new incentive program to advance the Governor's "Competence to Excellence" agenda. In order to qualify for the award schools must meet or exceed all state and federal performance benchmarks for at least two consecutive years. Additionally they must meet the Governor's goals for achievement in elementary reading, Algebra I enrollment by grade 8, enrollment in college-level courses, and attainment of advanced diplomas and career and industry certifications. Accepting this award on behalf of their schools are:

The School Board is now pleased to recognize the Cox High School boys' and girls' soccer teams for receiving the High School Team Academic Award for the 2006-2007 School Year from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Members of these talented teams include:

The teams are coached by Michele Clark, Terri Sawyer, Melissa Rusak, Scott Mead, Brannon Thomas, Dave Flores, and Jim Snodrass, who will accept the plaque on behalf of Cox High School. Cox High School received this prestigious award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Cox was one of only 61 schools nationwide to have both their boys and girls soccer teams recognized as an academic award winner. The cumulative team grade point average for both teams was over 3.25. Please join me in congratulating the members of the Cox High boys' and girls' soccer teams!

6D. 2007 VHSL State Champion Golf Team
The School Board is now pleased to recognize Cox High School as the 2007 VHSL State Golf Champions.

The team is coached by Mike Weirich and Brian Allard, who will accept the school plaque.

Cox won its fifth overall state crown and second straight championship at the Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket, VA on October 10, 2007. The Falcons became only the eighth team in nearly a half-century to win back-to-back championships at the Group AAA level, shooting a 594. In addition to the state championship, the team won the Beach District Tournament with a District Record 555, as well as the Eastern Region Championship with a Regional Record of 583. This outstanding team also took first place with a 310 in the Newport News Invitational, and first place in the Virginia Invitational with a 293 and 302. Please join me in congratulating the 2007 VHSL State Golf Champions!


6E. 2007 VHSL State Champion Girls' Field Hockey Team

The team is coached by Catherine McCallum, and Julie Swain, who was named the state Coach of the Year. Ms. Swain will accept the team plaque.

The Cox High field hockey team won their 15th state championship at the U.S. National Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach on November 10. In addition to the state championship, the team won the Beach District Tournament, as well as the Eastern Region Championship.

Kiley A., a senior bound for Boston University, has been voted the Group AAA state field hockey Player of the Year by coaches around the state. She also earned first team honors on the All-Beach District, All-Eastern Region and All-Tidewater squads. Kiley is joined on the all state first team by teammates Taylor R., Stefanie F. and Brianna M. Making the second team was Elizabeth F. Please join me in congratulating the 2007 VHSL State Field Hockey Champions!
