6. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions
6A. Bronze & Silver Congressional Award Recipient
The School Board is pleased to recognize Jessica M., a senior at Kempsville High School, for being awarded the Bronze and Silver Congressional Award Medals. This is the highest honor bestowed upon America's youth. Congresswoman Thelma Drake recently presented the medals to Jessica.
To earn the award, young people must set and achieve goals in the four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration.
Congresswoman Thelma Drake said, "I am proud of the many contributions Jessica has made to her community…These medals are a testament to Jessica's commitment to the values of public service, personal growth, initiative, and achievement, all of which are cornerstones of the Congressional Award."
Please join me in congratulating Jessica for this outstanding accomplishment!
6B. 2007 American Council of Teachers of Russian Scholar Laureates
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the 2007 American Council of Teachers of Russian Scholar Laureates.
Seniors Ann E., Kellam High School, Brynna H., Salem High School, and Junior Heather S., Tallwood High School Global Studies and World Languages Academy, have been selected as 2007 American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) Russian Scholar Laureates. The Board of Directors of the American Council of Teachers of Russian, a constituent organization of the American Councils for International Education, has established this special award. These students are members of a highly select national group of Russian students that were nominated by their teachers and principals as the most outstanding Russian students of 2007. Ms. Alfreda Pohrivchak, VBCPS Distance Learning Russian Teacher nominated these outstanding students.
Ann, Brynna and Heather were recognized in a special section of the fall issue of the ACTR Letter that was published in early September. Please join me in congratulating these outstanding students of Russian!
6C. 2007 National Board Certified Teachers
The School Board is pleased to recognize the following educators for earning national board certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Mark Clemente and Don Kroeller
National Board Certification, a voluntary process established by NBPTS, is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes nearly a year to complete. Through the assessment process, teachers document their subject matter knowledge; provide evidence that they know how to teach their subjects to students most effectively; and demonstrate their ability to manage and measure student learning. The dedication and hard work of these teachers is to be commended. Please join me in congratulating these National Board Certified Teachers!
