4. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognitions4.A. 2006 NIAAA Distinguished Service Award
The School Board is pleased to recognize Bruce Phelps as a 2006 recipient of a Distinguished Service Award by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
Bruce Phelps, coordinator of student activities, has been selected by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) as a 2006 recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. Phelps is one of only eleven athletic administrators – nationwide – to be honored this year. Recipients of this award are recognized by the NIAAA for their length of service, special accomplishments and contributions to athletic administration at the local, state and national levels.
Mr. Phelps was nominated and selected for this award due to his extensive leadership roles, over the past 20 years, in the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (VIAAA), Virginia High School League (VHSL), and NIAAA along with many varied roles in athletic programs and organizations throughout the state.
Mr. Phelps will be presented with the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award during the National Athletic Directors Conference on December 11, 2006 in Anaheim, California.

4.B. Wachovia Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award
The School Board is now pleased to recognize Bayside High School, Frank W. Cox. High School, First Colonial High School and Ocean Lakes High School for receiving the 2006 VHSL Wachovia Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award.
At this time, we would like to invite the principals, student activities coordinators, and students from these schools to come forward.
Bayside, Cox, First Colonial and Ocean Lakes High Schools received the prestigious Wachovia award from the Virginia High School League. The “Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity” award congratulates schools for meeting rigorous sportsmanship criteria. This award, among the VHSL’s most prestigious, honors high schools in Virginia that prioritize sportsmanship in all activities and athletic programs. Recipients of this distinction serve as examples of sportsmanship and role models for other schools in the division, region, and state.
Accepting on behalf of Bayside High School is Principal Kay Thomas and Student Activities Coordinator Lisa Corprew; accepting on behalf of Cox High School is Principal Brian Matney, Student Activities Coordinator James Long, along with student athletes Kaitlyn Hiltz and King Saunders; accepting on behalf of First Colonial High School is Principal Dale Holt and Student Activities Coordinator Hollie Phelps, along with student athletes Carole Reda and Nick DiMascio; and accepting on behalf of Ocean Lakes High School is Principal Cheryl Askew and Student Activities Coordinator John Williams, along with SCA Officer Megan Banko.
