6. Student, Employee, and Public Awards and Recognition
6.A. Outstanding Attendance – June 2006
The School Board is pleased to recognize the schools with the highest rates of student attendance for the month of June 2006. Representatives from these schools are invited to come forward as their school’s name is announced.
North Landing Elementary, with an attendance rate of 97.39% is the recipient of the elementary school attendance flag for June. Accepting North Landing’s attendance certificate is Principal Julie Risney and Assistant Frank Gillikin. Congratulations to students and staff at North Landing Elementary!
Kemps Landing Magnet School, with an attendance rate of 98.89%, receives the attendance certificate, as well as most improved attendance certificate, for middle schools for June. Accepting both certificates for Kemps Landing Magnet is Charles H. Foster, Assistant Principal. Congratulations to the students and staff at Kemps Landing Magnet School for their outstanding student attendance in March!
At the high school level, the attendance flag for June 2006 goes to Salem High who reported a 97.02% student attendance rate. Accepting the school’s certificate is Assistant Principal Ann Shows.

6.B. Most Improved Attendance – June 2006
The School Board will now recognize the schools with the most improved attendance for the month of June 2006.
A review of attendance data shows that Shelton Park Elementary had the highest percent of most improved attendance for June with an improvement rate of 1.03% for student attendance. Accepting Shelton Park’s attendance certificate is Principal Lou Anne Metzger and students Alex and Sai F. Congratulations to students and staff at Shelton Park Elementary!
We have already presented the most improved attendance certificate for middle schools to Kemps Landing Magnet School
And, Open Campus High had the highest percent of most improved attendance at the high school level with an improvement rate of 5.86% for student attendance for June 2006. Accepting Open Campus’ certificate is Interim Principal Joshua Darden. Congratulations to Open Campus!
6.D. 2006 SkillsUSA National and State Competition Winners
The School Board is pleased to recognize the 2006 SkillsUSA National and State champions in Advertising, Telecommunications Cabling, Technical Computer Applications and Internetworking.
During the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Missouri, held June 20 – 26, 2006, Russell C., an Advanced Technology Center Telecommunications graduate, placed second in the nation in the Telecommunications competition. Russell also placed 1st in the State Conference in Telecommunications Cabling.
Also, several students from the Advanced Technology Center participated in and won at the State Leadership Skills USA Conference in Richmond, Virginia on April 28-29, 2006. Gemma C., a Digital Design Graduate, took 1st place in Advertising Design, Andrew C., computer Network administration graduate, received first place in Technical Computer Application, and Chris W., a Cisco Graduate, garnered first place in Internetworking.

6.E. 2006 Technology Student Association National Champions
The School Board will now recognize the first place National Technology Student Association Champions from Landstown High.
Landstown High School’s Technology Student Association took several top honors at the TSA National Competition in Dallas, Texas in June. The team of Josh B., Ben M., and Tony S., won first place in the Systems Control Competition. This event has programming and actual construction involved in the final solution, all done within three hours. Also placing first in the nation in the Architectural CAD category competition was Tim B. Mr. Austin Mantay is the sponsor for Landstown High School’s Technology Student Association. Mr. Mantay will accept the plaque on behalf of the school.

6.F. 2006 VHSL Girls’ State Outdoor Track & Field Champions
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the 2006 VHSL Girls’ State Outdoor Track & Field Champions.
The Landstown High School Girls Track Team took co-state champion honors at the VHSL State Outdoor Track and Field Championships held on June 3, 2006 at Todd Stadium, Newport News. Team members include: Faith B., Leah B., Whitney E., Kelnesha H., Cierra M., and Marlena W. The relay team of Faith, Leah, Kelnesha and Cierra won a first place medal in the 4x400 relay, and Cierra received a first place in the 200 Meter Dash. The team is coached by Marcus Adams, Tom Anderson, Dave Coulter, and Minnie Reliford. Coach Anderson will accept the plaque on behalf of the school.

The Salem High School Girls 4 x 100Meter relay team also took a first place at the 2006 state VHSL championships. The members of the relay team are: Shonterria F., Olivia H., Shamika K. and Teinesha M. The team is coached by George Porter. Please join me in congratulating the Salem High Schools girls 4x100 meter relay team!
6.G. 2006 VHSL State Boys’ Outdoor Track & Field Champions
The School Board is proud to recognize the Bayside High School Boys Track Team as the 2006 VHSL State Boys Track Champions.
The state outdoor track championships were held in Newport News on June 2-3, 2006. At that time, the Bayside High School Boys Outdoor Track team won the state team boys track championship. In addition, the team also claimed three individual state titles in 100 Meter, 200 Meter, and 400 Meter Dash. Members of this talented team are: Oliver A., Raphael B., CJ C., Charles C., who took individual state titles in the 100M, 200M, and 400M, Danny H., Jamal J., and
AJ M. It should also be noted that Charles and Oliver finished first and second in the 100M and 200M, one of the few times a school went 1,2 in both events. The team is coached by Lanny Doan and assisted by Butch Caldwell and Diana Scofield. Coach Doan will accept the plaque on behalf of the school.

6.H. 2006 VHSL State Girls’ Tennis Champions
The School Board is pleased to recognize Cox High School as the 2006 VHSL State Girls Tennis Champions. The Cox girls tennis team won the State Team Tennis Championship for a second year in a row and posted an undefeated record of 18-0. The girls also won the Beach District.
Throughout the season the team worked hard, gained confidence and in the State Tournament, they won 15 of 17 individual matches. The girls team also recorded wins over perennial tennis powers Mills Godwin and Jamestown. The Cox girls’ tennis team is the first from the Eastern Region to win back to back state team titles. The team consists of members Imee B., Morgan E.,
Sally G., Madeline H., Paige H., Chelsea N., Allison P., Steli R., Casey R., Shannon R., Stephanie R., Kirra S., and Abbey W.
The team is coached by Worth Remick and George and Nancy Schwenk. Coach Remick will accept the plaque on behalf of the school. Please join me in congratulating the 2006 VHSL Girls’ Tennis Champions!
These outstanding athletes bring great honor and distinction to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools! Well done!
