6A. Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair Mathematics Award Winner!

The School Board is proud to recognize Swarnali S. as the Mathematics winner of the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at George Mason University.

Swarnali, a senior at Ocean Lakes High School, represented Virginia Beach in the Mathematics Division at the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair on April 7th. In her research project, she mathematically modeled cardiac action potentials to better understand the intrinsic properties of heart and cardiac cell characteristics. Swarnali's project, Conquering the Heart through Computation, was inspired by her Mathematics and Science Academy mentorship project with a group of cardiologists at Sentara Bayside. For her outstanding work, Swarnali was awarded a 1st place prize in the Mathematics division of the State Science and Engineering Fair.

6B. Outstanding Attendance – April 2007
The School Board is pleased to recognize the schools with the highest rates of student attendance for the month of April 2007. Representatives from these schools are invited to come forward as their school's name is announced.

Kingston Elementary School, with an attendance rate of 97.81 percent, is the recipient of the elementary school attendance certificate for April. Accepting Kingston's attendance certificate are Principal Dr. Nancy Davenport and Annie O, the SCA Vice President and a 5th grader with Perfect Attendance for this school year. Congratulations to students and staff at Kingston Elementary School!

Kemps Landing Magnet School, with an attendance rate of 98.00 percent, receives the attendance certificate for middle schools for April. Accepting the certificate for Kemps Landing Magnet School is Principal Randi R. Riesbeck. Congratulations to the students and staff at Kemps Landing Magnet School for their outstanding student attendance in April!

At the high school level, the outstanding attendance certificate for April 2007, goes to Ocean Lakes High School which reported a 95.62 percent student attendance rate. Representing Ocean Lakes High School tonight are assistant principal Norman Benwitz and Demetrius E., a senior with perfect attendance for his entire high school career. Congratulations to Ocean Lakes High School students and staff!

6C. Most Improved Attendance – April 2007
The School Board will now recognize the schools with the most improved attendance for the month of April 2007.

Kempsville Elementary School posted the greatest increase in attendance for April with an improvement rate of 3.64 percent. Accepting Kempsville Elementary School's attendance certificate is Principal Irvin Beard. Congratulations to students and staff at Kempsville Elementary School!

Lynnhaven Middle School's students showed the greatest improvement in student attendance at the middle school level, up 1.05 percent in April. Accepting Lynnhaven Middle's attendance certificate is the Assistant Principal in charge of attendance, Bruce Enzmann. Congratulations to students and staff at Lynnhaven Middle School!

At the high school level, Green Run High School showed the greatest improvement in student attendance — up 1.39 percent in April. Accepting Green Run High's attendance certificate are Principal George Parker and Edward A., a senior with perfect attendance for this school year. Congratulations to students and staff at Green Run High School!
