3.A. Preserve America State History Teacher of the Year

The School Board is pleased to recognize Mary M. Gunsalus, a teacher at Landstown Middle School, for receiving the Preserve America History Teacher of the Year Award from the Virginia Department of Education.

“Molly” Gunsalus has been named Virginia’s 2005 Preserve America History Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education. Preserve America is a White House initiative that encourages greater shared knowledge about our nation’s past and increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage. This award for history and social science teachers was established last year, and is co-sponsored by Preserve America and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Ms. Gunsalus, a 27-year veteran of the teaching profession, is a seventh-grade United States History teacher and Social Science facilitator at Landstown Middle School. More than ninety percent of Ms. Gunsalus’s students last year passed the United States History: 1877 to the Present --Standards of Learning test, with nearly 30 percent of her students scoring at the advanced level.

Ms. Gunsalus will receive a $1,000 honorarium, a certificate of recognition, and a donation of history books and materials to the Landstown Middle School library in her honor. She now represents Virginia in the national Preserve America competition.

3.B. SkillsUSA National Competition Winners

The School Board will now recognize the 2005 National SkillsUSA champions in Total Quality Management and Internetworking.

During the National SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Missouri, held June 19 th – 25 th, 2005, the team of Nichole H., Travis P., Aris R., Tearle G. and Lance H., placed first in the Total Quality Management Team competition. These students are enrolled in Cisco, the Cisco Networking Academy, and Digital Design classes at the Advanced Technology Center. Their project so impressed the judges with their approach to the problem of declining Army recruits, that a lead Army officer plans to present their project to commanders at the Army Recruiting center for consideration!

In addition, Kyle K., also a student at the Advanced Technology Center, placed second in the national Internetworking competition during this year’s SkillsUSA competition. Kyle will be traveling to San Francisco this month to meet with officials from Cisco, Inc.

Congratulations to the SkillsUSA national champions in Total Quality Management and Internetworking!

3.C. 2005 National Garrett Morgan Symposium Winners

The School Board is now pleased to recognize students from Kemps Landing Magnet School, for garnering first place in the 2005 Fifth National Garrett Morgan Symposium.

A Kemps Landing Magnet School team of students finished first place, nation-wide, in the 2005 Fifth National Garrett Morgan Symposium on sustainable transportation for the future. The student’s winning entry proposed a UniModal plan that involved a form of magnetic levitation on a suspended track, with Bus Rapid Transit to take riders through tunnels and then link up again with UniModal. The students examined several ideas that have already been explored for the Hampton Roads area, weighing the pros and cons of each, including the cost, and then incorporated the UniModal system for Hampton Roads. Their concept was presented during a national teleconference sponsored by the Mineta Institute. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) sponsored the team in the competition. 3.D. 2005 National Achievement Scholars

The School Board will now recognize students who have been selected as 2005 National Achievement Scholars.

The National Achievement ® Scholarship Program is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Students may enter both the National Achievement Program and the National Merit ® Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and meeting other published requirements for participation.

The following VBCPS students have been selected as 2005 National Achievement Scholars:

3.E. 2005 Virginia High School League Boys Baseball Champions

The School Board is proud to recognize the Princess Anne High School Baseball Team as the 2005 VHSL State Boys Baseball Champions!

The Princess Anne High School baseball team won the Group AAA Virginia State Baseball Championship on June 11, 2005 at the College of William and Mary. They defeated Osbourn High School in Manassas, by a score of 11-10, in 12 innings of exciting play. The Cavaliers overcame an 8 – 0 deficit, and eventually won in extra innings, in what may be considered to be one of the most dramatic games in state championship history. The team finished the season with an impressive 23-6 record. Here tonight to receive commendations of distinction are the members of this talented team:

3.F. 2005 Virginia High School League Girls State Soccer Champions

Our last recognition this evening if for the Kellam High School Girls’ Soccer Team who are the 2005 VHSL State Girls Soccer Champions!

The Kellam Knights Girls Soccer team captured the state championship on June 11, 2005 when they defeated Lake Braddock 2-0 at Christopher Newport University. This victory represented the first state title for an Eastern Region girls team since the tournament began in 1984. The team finished their season undefeated, and are ranked #4 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America!
