Nominations for the Quality Award are submitted to the Office of Organizational Development and are selected for recognition based on the quality practices demonstrated.

This quarter’s award goes toThe Eagles’ Morning Brew”, a multifaceted school-based enterprise that was implemented at Landstown High School through the collaborative efforts of the school’s Work and Family Studies and Special Education Departments. The project involves the creation of a student-run coffee shop that is open in the mornings to serve fresh-baked goods and hot coffee to teachers and administrators. To prepare students for work in the coffee kiosk, students take a culinary course as well as a work experience course. Students in the culinary class prepare the breakfast items that are sold in the kiosk. In addition, students greet customers, work with cash and make change, and complete all necessary tasks. Students in the Advanced Hospitality and Catering classes assist the students with special needs in both the kiosk and the culinary class. This project is designed to assist special needs students in transitioning to work in the food service industry by teaching them hands-on skills that will enable them to achieve gainful employment upon graduation. Faculty, students, parents, and community partners work collaboratively to identify and solve issues related to the successful implementation of this project. The many decisions made to continuously improve the project are based on data collected by the school staff. This project also incorporated support from community partners such as Bella Monte International Marketplace and Café, Equipment Plus, First Colony Coffee, Sysco Foodservice of Hampton Roads, Tidewater Foodservice, and The Virginian Pilot. Overall, the Eagles’ Morning Brew project has enabled special needs students at Landstown High School to develop skills related to marketing, hands-on operations, business management, problem-solving, and effective communication through the implementation of quality practices and processes and have resulted in students who are more prepared to meet workplace demands. In addition, this project has garnered a 2005 Region 2 “Creating Excellence Award” from the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Advisory Commission for Career and Technical Education. Congratulations!
